Question about face pulls
« on: July 10, 2007, 03:43:36 PM »
Which way is the proper way to do face pulls? The other day my PT had me try both grips:

This way (overhand grip) kills my bad shoulder, I feel it in the upper arm. Possibly referred pain from having a weak rotator cuff:

This way (neutral grip) doesn't kill my shoulder but I'm not sure if it's the right way to do face pulls:

Is doing it the second way (the neutral grip that doesn't hurt) a good way of doing face pulls so I can work my upper back/rear delts?

To be honest I was like what the hell are face pulls. I have not heard of that before.

I'm no expert but it look unnaturel to me. Hurts my shoulder just looking at it! LOL Can't see how thats nothing more then a shaping exercices instead of a mass builder. IMO Going heavy looks like a good way to hurt yourself.  Theres better exercices out there then that for upper back rear delts., but if thats what you want to do, you have to do which ever don't hurt. What good is doing it overhand if it kills your shoulder.

Looking  forward to what others have to say about this exercice as I have never heard of it before

I have always preferred doing them on the low pulley row cable using a strap (hook your fingers in, palms down).  Similar to this:

High Cable Row or Hight Rope Pull...never heard of "face pull" but I definetely think the neutral grip is much more natural and, for athletice purposes: wrestling, jiujitsu, football, more effective.  I would always do them standing in a staggered stance postion (like the first picture).

Princess L's way is more more isolation and contraction of the upper back and rear delts, so if that's your goal I'd do it like that.
