They are in the top 10, they just werent evaluated.  Only staffies were.


The problem with that study is its EXTREMELY biased.  The criteria for evaluating intelligence was how the dogs responded to new commands.  More strongwilled dogs (the tenacious breeds) or dogs that are hesitant will automatically be biased against.  Look through the entire list terriers as a whole group are in the lower 1/3.   Its also not a surprise at all that border collies and retrievers were in the top 10. These are breeds that were developed to follow commands of handlers from a distance, to "eye" the handler and move on a snap instant.   That gives them an unfair advantage for this criteria say vs a black and tan coonhound which is a breed developed to hunt in a pack following the pack.

If I had a Rottweiler site....I would say something like this...


You should expect your dog to eat paper towels & lick everything and anything - living & nonliving and be thankful if you adopt one that isn't.  The golden rule of Rottweiler ownership is...."Never trust a Rottweiler to not put something in his/her mouth & swallow no matter how loud you yell.

 i will go back and delete my post.  i was just trying to post some info dealing with the intellegence of the breed.


The Pit Bull is a dog that is mentally sound.  They do not snap, contrary to popular belief, and they have a reason or goal for every one of their actions.

They are also incredibly smart.  In fact, the highest obedience trial record of all time is held by an APBT named "Maddy".  This wonderful trait makes them a pleasure to live with, because you can literally teach them to do just about anything.

This is also beneficial to those in need, as Pit Bulls make great service dogs.  The DEA and various other law enforcement agencies are beginning to appreciate the intelligence of this breed and are starting to use them in lieu of German Shepherds

One down side to their intelligence, however, is that they can be stubborn and hard to break of bad habits they may learn.  If they don't think you're doing something the way it should be done, they'll refuse to follow you and will do it their own way.  Because of this, they require an owner who is willing to dedicate a lot of time to their training.  But, the end result is a simply incredible companion that will make you proud for life.

Even though we all know it depends on the individual dog, I agree with the poodle ranking.  Very quick learners.  I think the list is dumb but if I had to pick a top 5 or something, poodles would be in there.
