Hedge, please compare Jon Pall to the great strongmen....
« on: December 05, 2007, 10:02:49 PM »
How does Jon Pall compare against a prime Kaz and Pudz?

We should take just a second to remember the great man that was Jon Pall Sigmarsson.

"there is no point in being alive if you cannot do the deadlift"

Grown men in Iceland wept went news was received that Jon Pall had passed. RIP.

IMHO Jon Pall would've been very well fit to compete against a prime Pudzi.

And he held more than his own against Kazmaier, being the only one who was able to defeat Kaz back then.

Overall, I have to give the slight edge to Kaz over Jon Pall, but IMO Jon Pall had slightly better speed, whereas Kaz had a stronger chest. Shoulder strength: I think JP was actually stronger here, could be wrong though? Their back strength was more or less equal, leg strength: Kaz. Endurance: Hard to say, equal?

Pudzi is of a new generation, but ranks behind these guys IMO. He would probably beat them if he went back in a time machine, but they were more dominant than he is today.

Best ever IMO is Savickas though. But I don't think it's possible to say he is greater than Kaz or JP. They were as dominant.

Jón Páll is a legend in Iceland, every man woman and child knows his name to this day. They might as well put him on our currency or something.

I used to see Jón Páll all the time back in the 90's, I trained judo with his son Sigmar back then. I'll never forget the first time I saw him, I was 10 years old and I was going swimming in a public pool. In Iceland you have to shower before you go into the pool or they won't let you in. He was standing in a shower stall in between a couple of normal guys. I'd never seen a human being like him before (or since), not only that but he wasn't standing in the stall like a normal guy, oh no. Most people kind of stand there and slouch in the shower, but not Jón Páll, he stood with his legs apart, hands on his hips, his chest puffed out and his head held high. Why? Because he was Jón Páll. The guy was fucking awesome, I bet he took a shit with his back straight and his arms folded with a scowl on his face.

BTW Kaz was a better powerlifter but Jón Páll was a better strongman because he was more athletic than Kaz.

Great post, thank you. It's always very refreshing to hear about such a great man.

Savickas was hammered several times by Mariusz. Kaz has already told that Mariusz is probably the best ever. BTW Mariusz can only be dominant in his federaton he can't compete in both!

He was "hammered", IMO only due to the fact that the events were fairly light and focused on muscular endurance rather than raw strength.

Eg, an event which you don't see at the WSM, is log lift for heaviest 1RM, but you may see them rep with 315 lbs, and then Pudzi may actually beat Savickas.

In Arnold Classic, where the events are heavy as shit, Savickas dominates Pudzi.

But traditionally, the WSM has always been about combining speed with strength. Savikas is better powerlifter, but Pudz is a better strongman competitor. But also, what would be Mariusz's strength to compete with Savikas at Arnolds if he was 350lbs  :o
