Olympic Clean plateau
« on: January 18, 2008, 06:06:54 PM »
I have worked up to 190 for a triple and a double in the same work out.  I am currently sick and I hit a hard 2 reps with 190 today.  185 was real easy but this seems to be kicking my butt.  I do a 3x3 routine all with the same weight.  Should I drop back down a bit and work up again?  Should I pyramid through my sets or use the same weight throughout?  Thanks.

What does your lifting sched look like? Do you never go down in weight? Elaborate, please.

I do a traditional split but have incorporated power lifts.

Chest/Biceps
Incline-5x5
Flat-3x8
Preacher curls-4x6
Incline curls-4x6
Cable curls-4x10-12
Calf raises-5x30
Situps-varies
Pushups-varies

Back
Pullups-70 reps
Olympic cleans-3x3...190 lbs all sets
BB rows-4x5
Pulley rows-3x10

Delts/Triceps
Push Press-3x5
High pulls-4x5
Dips-4x15-25
Incline skullcrushers-3x6
Pressdowns-3x12

I always try to go up.  I stagnate along the way here and there and move up when the strength increase comes

So you always go for max?

You need to give yourself some rest. Try a light/medium/heavy weight 3 week schedule OR light week/heavy week rotation and see how it goes.

If you are specifically looking to increase your cleans then you should do exercises that will help just that. High pulls, front squats, hypers.....

Yeah, I probably should.  Should I pyramid each set with cleans or stick with the same weight in each set?

I would ALWAYS warm up by building up with my largest lift first. You like cleans, emphasize them by putting them first and using low weight to warm up with.

But would a heavy set of 3 be cool for a heavy week?  I couldn't see myself doing many more reps with good form.  I read somewhere of guys going down to a single on their heavy sets.

Try it the way you have it, just warm up and cycle weeks, heavy and light. One thing at a time. Moving to a heavy single IS the natural progression though, yes.
