Horses Anyone?
« on: March 21, 2008, 06:44:42 AM »
Not sure if there is a thread here on horses so I wanted to start one.  Does anyone here have a horse?  As a kid we went up to our cabin a lot and we rode horses.  My dad grew up in Texas on a ranch so he really was good on a horse.  I never got into it.  It always seemed I got a shitty horse.  When my daughters mom had a house built in Palmdale we decided to buy our daughters each a horse.  It was a great decision.  It gave my daughters some responsibility.  They both had to go to some school to teach them all about horses.  They each graduated and was very good with their horses.  One was named Snickers and the other Damien.  My oldest daughter was unreal on her horse.  She won several barrel racing trophies and ribbons.  I really ended up liking these horses.  They were really good.

One story was when I was in town visiting them I had just taken my daughters to school and was getting ready at their house to go back to Hawaii.  I was saying bye to the horses.  I would shut the gate and get in my rental car and take off and look in my mirror and see Damien walking towards the car.  I got out and grabbed him and took him back and was just thinking I didn't shut the gate good. So I made sure this time. As I took off I again saw Damien coming towards the car.  I got out again and took him back thinking what the heck is going on.  This time on the way to the car I suddenly turn around and that dang horse was using his mouth to pull open the latch and get out.  Man I couldn't believe it.  I ended up tying the gate closed.  I called my daughter to tell her and she just tells me she does it all the time cause she doesn't want you to leave.

Anyway, those horses were cool.  Plus when our daughters did anything wrong or doing bad in school we just threaten to take the horses away and all of a sudden they are princess's again.

My wife has 4.  Two saddlebreds from when she was a child in Missouri and a thoroughbred who was a research horse of hers when she did her residency and our quarterhorse, which I bought for her when we were in veterinary school.

The thoroughbred and quarterhorse are used as teaching animals by some of her students becuase they have some chronic problems (the quarter horse is a chronic EPM horse and the Thoroughbred was a gutteral pouch mycosis/roarer when she got him).

I personally am more of a cattle person, but considering my wife is an equine surgeon, I've had to learn as much as possible to keep up with her.   ;)

I would love to own one, but I know I'm not worthy of the responsibility.

Yes.  I use it myself.  the owner sponsored my show back in 2001 thats how I heard about it.  It is awesome stuff and was just seeing if anyone here has used it for their horses.

i would love to have a horse someday.  i tried a motorcycle, but it didn't cure my want for a horse at all.  I think i was a cowboy in a past life.
