My wife has 4. Two saddlebreds from when she was a child in Missouri and a thoroughbred who was a research horse of hers when she did her residency and our quarterhorse, which I bought for her when we were in veterinary school.
The thoroughbred and quarterhorse are used as teaching animals by some of her students becuase they have some chronic problems (the quarter horse is a chronic EPM horse and the Thoroughbred was a gutteral pouch mycosis/roarer when she got him).
I personally am more of a cattle person, but considering my wife is an equine surgeon, I've had to learn as much as possible to keep up with her.
