Bench Press Info
« on: June 10, 2008, 11:16:08 AM »
I have a question .... My son (14) that is why he is not asking the question... He is training to increase his bench press as much as possible because in mid July they are having a bench a thon and max weight competition at his high school.
He currently has bench benching about every third day he has been doing heavy double rep sets and triple rep sets and has kind of hit a wall... he can bench 240 for a double and he weighs 193. He has also been doing dumbell benching on the same days he benches. He dumbell benches 75 for 3 sets of 5. and then he works arms legs and back the rest of the week. My question is should he bench once per week heavy and not so heavy the rest of the week or reduce benching to once per week etc? any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Incredible benchpress for that age.

Why not let him do 6-10 triples with 50% of his 1RM (cerca 120 lbs) one or two days a week.

And the other day, work doubles or triples, up to around 75-95% of his 1RM (depending on if you're gonna do a heavy or lighter week).

For assistance work, a little shoulder pressing and some DB presses.

But mostly triceps related stuff, such as close grips, chains, board presses.

Stay away from the shirt even though he's allowed to use it next year. Just focus on build a strong base.

But fcuk, that kid of yours is a quite a beast.

Just don't fcuk up his CNS by going heavy every week though.
As empty as paradise

Yeah he is getting big he grow about 4 inches in the last 12 months and he is working hard for football and he decide to go after the Sophomore bench press record... I will apply the advice ... and let him read it from the post .... because he thinks lifting heavy all the time is what he needs to do ... now he can read it for himself... thanks again...

Pretty much the most important thing I've learned all around is that you gotta lift light in order to lift heavy.

I just wanted to say thanks for the advice about my son's benching schedule etc. He has been going lighter 6 to 8 reps and 4 to 5 sets at the top end weight... and he says he is a little sore ... I told him that is a good thing because he wasn't getting sore doing all the heavy doubles. Thanks again .. I think this will help his benching max a lot down the line...

I guess so!

I would say thats way to much. He might get away with it for now but doing reps / sets /days like that is just asking to get hurt... even at that  Indestructible age LOL. Really though, he could pay for that years down the road.

I would look into doing doing heavy /light days

For me (and I stress this is a personal opinion), being sore is a bad thing. I feel this means a little over-training. I know a lot of guys here will disagree with me, but anyways. Since he is sore, I would recommend dropping the weight a little so that he has a bigger run-up to exceed his previous peak. I liken it to starting a car, if you rush and release the clutch too quickly you will stall. ie, if you lift too heavy too early in your cycle you won't get very far. This is just an idea to consider, I am in no way enforcing this on you or saying any other methods are wrong (I stress this because I know how sensitive people can be about training!). Best of luck to him! Let us know how he gets on

Well, my son says he is not all that sore this morning and feels pretty strong want to bench again today told him NO .. he can do his cleans light for reps he can hand 145 no prob and he will do about 5 to 6 sets of 5. Then he normally does his other pull exercises. It is really hard to keep this kid away from the bench but I told him in the long run it will pay off.....  Thanks again for all the advice it really is appreciated.
