Took my father-in-law to the Barbershop yesterday...
There was no pre-shampoo discussion in the chair about what they were going to do today...if it would work w/their hair..if it would be difficult to style..if they'd like it and if it would be cute.....
No talk of color or highlights....
When the man got in the chair the barber just started cutting.
In fact, there was no shampooing or conditioning of anyone's hair (although there were shampoo sinks behind each of the 4 chairs). Either they started chopping away when it was dry or they squirted it w/a water bottle a little and started snipping.
The main talk was re: sports but I did hear (and join) a very brief discussion about "fashion" (although they'd probably never use that word) and one about a guy's new dog.
I also observed a man that came in just to chat and leave w/o getting a cut.
No one swept up any hair in between cuts...maybe they leave it all until the end of the day?
No offers of coffee or water or wine but they were all very nice and polite and sweet.
All in all a great atmosphere and very efficient.
One of the things men have "good!"
Consultations with clients is the most important aspect of the service, a good consultation takes 5 mins.
need to see if the scalp is dry, hair is oily, if they have time to style it in the morning, If they like the wet look (gel) or dry look (wax), hairdressers or barber that dont do consultations are pathetic. How do you define a trim? what colour is blonde? can you maintain bangs every 4 weeks, can you afford to maintain regrowth every 4-6 weeks, do you blowdry or use a straightening iron, is your shampoo you use at home colour-safe, is the shampoo at home drying out your scalp and fading your colour, is the gel making your hair flaky, would you like to refresh the rest of the colour or just do the highlight and leave the ends..etc
