« on: August 30, 2008, 12:13:32 PM »
Hey guys I just caught a cold and I feel like shit, what are some of the best tactics I can use nutritionally to beat this thing as fast as possible? It's always taken me forever to beat colds my entire life, I don't know if it's because I've always been really lean or what, but I know theres alot of knowlegable people on this board and I was hoping on getting some great advice on this, thanks.

I always take tons of vitamin C, Tylenol cold and flu(I think that's what it is), and just chill and take it easy for a few days. Hope you get better soon bro.

Yeah I've been extra dosing Vit C and E, also been taking Tylenol cold and flu, the thing that sucks is I lose weight really fast, so whenever I get sick I drop like 5 pounds, it fuckin sucks, plus I was training for GetBig 3 and I was coming along really well, I don't know if I was overtraining or what, but this is really pissing me off..

Chill out and take 2 days off from training, keep hydrated and try to eat as much as you can. You should be ready to hit the weights again by Monday. Most people would like to lose 5 pounds lol, but you stay pretty shredded so I can see why it would be a problem for you.

Yeah, my problem is keeping the mass on, with alot of people it's the other way around, I'm just trying to eat as much as I can, it's pretty hard to eat when I'm sick, the appetite just isn't there..trying to stay positive though.

I think Airborne works great if you start dosing up right away,  I know the lawsuit awhile back says otherwise, but, anecdotal evidence says it works.

What i always do when i feel a cold coming on or i have a cold is to up my Vitamin C consumption HEAPS, drink a tonne of water, rest (no training, weights, cardio, its hard i know but a few days off won't kill you, lol) and as Dnaielson said, eat heaps. Whenever i have a cold i always get really hungry.

As for medicines, take whatever you feel necessary. Above is kinda like a natural approach to "flushing" the bug out of your system. It always works for me and within a couple of days im good to get back into training.
No doubt about it...

Depending on the type of symptoms you have, you might want to consider very hot baths or showers.  Baths are good if you're running a fever - since your body doesn't have to work as hard to keep your temperature up.  Showers can help with congestion (I mean I presume you take them anyway, but my advice would be to take two even three a day).  I also second the advice of eating a lot.  I actually have a tendency to gain weight when I"m sick - eat what you crave...WHATEVER you crave, because it generally indicates what your body needs in order to get better.  Other than that, rest - I do research on stress / stress coping, and I think sleep is totally undervalued in terms of recovery from illness or injury.

Make a big bowl of ramen noodles 2 packages (not 3 you'll thank me later!) put some cock sauce and peppers in it.  Doesn't cure the cold but you will feel a lot better.

Is this a typo?

No, it is an Asian hot sauce with a picture of a rooster on the bottle.  Everybody calls is cock sauce.

Heaps of hot water & lemon, makes you feel better, and clears your skin at the same time
Always use anti-bacterial hand sanitizier after the gym
never touch your eyes or mouth, thats how the virus gets into your system.
Take the influenza vaccine, I do it every year, never used a tissue since 2001

If you have the cold you have to ride it out..Hot water + lemon and rest.

IMO the best thing to do when you get a cold is to rest and eat plenty.  Taking a bunch of extra C is just going to make you piss.

I agree, i also think Vitamin C is overrated.
