THE ICEMAN PUT ON ICE
« on: October 02, 2008, 04:05:48 PM »
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell stated in a recent interview that he doesn’t plan to return anytime soon. “I'll fight sometime in the spring. Probably I'll go for a fight in the spring so we'll see, we'll see who'll they [the UFC] put me up against.”
With losses in three of out his last four fights, some are wondering what more the former champion has to prove.

After Rashad Evans gets his title shot against Forrest Griffin and Quinton Jackson gets a third shot at Wanderlei Silva, things in the UFC’s light heavyweight division might clear up.

There are also a few other light heavyweight fights to keep your eye on as well, as Lyoto Machida takes on Thiago Silva and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua returns to the Octagon against Mark Coleman.

The light heavyweight picture in the UFC should be a little clearer by the time spring rolls around.

Doesn't sound like Chucky is too exited to come back, and get smashed again.

I think he needs to consider revamping his training.  His performances as of late haven't been as dominating as before as more people are now able to figure out and neutralize chuck's gameplan. Like Tyson in his latter years Chuck is now a headhunter - relying too much on that one punch knockout.

Totally agree, that's all he was doing during the whole Rashad fight, just running around with that right hand cocked looking for the one punch KO.

I don't think that keeping your hands at waist level, using little or no head movement, and throwing looping punches has anything to do with it.  He needs to set up his punches, punch in combination, and use that wrestling that he used against Wandy.  Definitely a change in game plans would put him back into the thick of things.

I still think he's fallen by the wayside because he's always counted on that right looping overhand to win, he never really rounded out his game like a lot of other guys have, he's one of the old school cats (well relatively)
he needs to get into a good training camp and work on some other styles ie. muay thai, jits,

At this point in his career, IDT he will "evolve" much.  He can take the tools he already has and use them better, however.  He is a COUNTERPUNCHER who can generate power moving backwards or sideways.  He should change things up by using his D1 wrestling that he has to set up his punches.  Also, he is an effective kicker.  Low kicks used in combination with that pawing lead hand hook, or cut kick would create more openings.

I just don't think Chuck trains as hard anymore. He has made so much money at this point this is just extra cushion... Plus do we really think he could ever be the champ ever again. I love Chuck to death and think he will be in the hall of fame for sure, but I don't think he can bang with the new guys coming up anymore.

Bingo! he's actually here at my new school - Xtreme Couture Toronto Oct.16th for a seminar, though after him getting destroyed by Rashad I doubt a lot of ppl will show up.

I think Chuck does 3 things great, SPRAWL, Punching off an awkward possition (off a back foot, steping to the side) and sell tickets. I would love to train with the guy for a few days, but I just think people have figured out his game. This reminds me of when Royce was a huge star and no one knew his game, but Chuck is becoming very one sided compared to the people staying at the top of the game. Anderson Silva can bang with the best and if you take him to the ground you might be in trouble depending on who you are.. Chuck can't say that, but BJ can as well as GSP.  These are the great champs. Forrest can handle his no matter where he is, but when you think about Chuck all you think about is Sprawl, Banging the hands, and selling tickets.

I concur. In his earlier matches he used to throw kicks and use combinations more often. Now those skills seem to be underutilized.

He has a decent double leg, something he doesn't seem to utilize unless he is in trouble.  If he were to throw a jab and shoot, he could bring his opponents hands lower for his overhand.  He has become to enamored with the flashy KO.  Obviously Greg Jackson and Mike Winklejohn have scouted Chack well.  They seem to know his tendencys.
