i have a 2 and a half year old babyboy who,s grip is like a vice, anyway im pretty excited about getting him into bjj/wrestling.im gonna get him wrestling once he starts school and i believe to do bjj you have to be 4 years old at least.i have wresling mats in my spare room here at my house and i play around with him now but ofcoarse he has no idea what im doing, for him its play time but hes atleast getting the feel of being on a mat with someone which couldnt hurt imo.im hoping he does well and more importantly that he loves bjj like i do,alot of guys at my job are enrolling thier kids in karate and teakwondo,im not one to downgrade another martial art and if thats thier choice thats cool i guess.when i tell them my sons gonna be doin bjj they look at me like im nuts, one guy went as far to say that im making amistake and if my son gets into a REAL FIGHT he will be introuble especially against a karate kid or taekwondo.i just smiled cause its a no win argument with people that dont know the real deal.i believe karate and other striking arts are great(IN ADDITION) to bjj/wrestling.im gonna have my son get to at least his blue belt,a gracie or gracie trained instructor blue belt.ive seen guys come from other bjj schools with 2 stripe brown belts only to get owned by a few gracie blue belts, and almost got got by a gracie white belt who had about 14 months under his belts.no disrespect to other schools but its my choice and your choice on who you want to instruct your kids, anyway have a great christmas and new year everyone and thanks for reading this long ass post :)

You gonna be so disappointed when your kid comes home one day and says: dad, I want to start doing hockey, or something. :)
Just kidding. Start him of early, god knows he has the genes to become the next big thing in MMA. You don't want to waste time there.

As for the dude who told your kid would be in trouble in a fight with a karateka... Dude's a massive fool and at that age they are not supposed to kick eachothers skulls in. You should have armbarred him till he wept.

My son did his first tournament 1 month ago and got second.  He was one of six kids, and the only 4 year old competing with the 5-6 year olds.  The winner beat him on points, but he got a cross collar choke after getting both hooks in and holding the back for most of the round.  I was as proud as can be.  I've been playing with him on my home mats since he was 2.  He can mata leao with the best of them, and isn't too bad off his back.  You can never start too young.

great feedback guys,im so glad i didnt have a girl, alot of dads say its the same thing as far as getting the girls into sports as it is the boys, they can brainwash themeslves all day but i think as far as sports go they wouldve been happier with a boy.dont get me wrong, girls are awesome athletes and in some cases just as talented as boys but i feel pretty safe saying most of you athlete type guys like myself would prefer a boy over a girl if you had a choice.plus another bad thing is when she gets alittle older your gonna have these horny little testosterone loaded teenage dudes sniffing around your house looking for your daughter like a bassett hound searching for a rabbit.i dont think i could deal with that to well, even though we all did the same thing in our days,im a old man thats why i say in our days,im sure alot of you are younger then me,ill be 44 on march 11,same birthday as renzo gracie.when i first joined his school i told him i have the same birthday as him and he was very very cool, renzo is one of the nicest guys youll ever meet imo.i figured id get a discount or something cause of that, just joking.i remember rollin with this girl at the gracie academy and she must have weighed 130,and i shit you not,she caught me in 5 or 6 different subs, the only reason i got out was cause i outweighed by over 100lbs and was alot stronger and more importantly i didnt panic and knew the counter.i was playin it off like i wasnt tryin to hard to the guys sitting against the wall watching us roll but man i was goin 100% and then some, but like i said i had to play it off.her game was way better then mine, just cause i muscled out of some subs doesnt mean crap, her game was tight and she was very well rounded

Yeah mine is 7 months yesterday. Last night we walked into her room only to find her standing up and holding onto her toy. When we left she was laying down, crazy shit I tell you. Once she is able to walk she will be wrestling with dad. Gracie, I wanted a boy so bad, but after having my lil girl I wouldn't change anything. At the place I train there is a little girl who is 8 or so? and I would be confident saying that she could mop the floor with any boy at her school.... She is very aggresive and doesn't wait to jump on a submission attempt. The amount of kids at the school is limited, but she is by far the best.

Most of the kids at my son's class (which I assist in teaching) are girls.  They are very coordinated, and have naturally good balance.  Two things that make learning BJJ easier.

My 4 year Grandson is in martial arts right now and kick ass.  My daughter sent me a video of him grappling and the kid on top of him couldn't get away and was yelling "let me go".  He is so strong.

I wouldn't want head trauma, so no muay thai.  Former instructor in Wing Chun, no longer practice it.  So you can tell what my opinion is of that.

what lineage?  Who was you Sifu or Sigong?  I like wing chun, but there are a lot of crappy instructors or wannabe sifu's.  we trained very hard.  I like the combo of WC, bjj, krav maga.

Sifu Wayde Ching, who is a student of Robert Yeung, who is a student of Wong Long, who was a student of Yip Man.  Low Niu ma doesn't translate to good TD defense.  Both hands along centerline, knees bowed in, toes pointed in toward the centerline doesn't fit well with BJJ.  Wayde went to Hong Kong, and was beating up all of Wong Shueng Leung's students at the HK athletic club.  Trust me when I say this, his wing chun is good.  Never fit me well, and after having Rorion, Relson and Royce show up, my ideas changed dramatically.

Let me ask you this, how many times were you able to pull off a compound trap like a pak sao, lop sao, gwai cho during a hard sparring session or a fight.  How often were your opponents overwhelmed by your jik cheung chui?  Have you ever sparred against someone outside of your Wing Chun school.  Have you been able to prevent the takedown against an accomplished wrestler?  Again, coming from a former WC guy.  chi sao, chi gerk alone does not a good fighter make.

I have sparred with kickboxers, karate, TKD, aikido, hapkido, JKD, as well as bjj, jj.  I agree that chi sao alone doesn't make a great fighter.  It is your training as a whole and you personal ability to adapt.  I have been taken down before as well as prevented takedowns.  I am by no means saying WC is the end all be all of martial arts.  But lets be realitsic, many of the WC people around are junk.  OUr sifu taught us conditioning and only 1st form for at least the 1st year.  Then as he felt ready would increase our knowledge.  No belts no sashes, nothing.  Your skill was your belt and that is how you advanced.  BJJ was harder to defend against.  But still defeatable.  I respect the arts, all of them.  Each has very aspects as well as some negative aspects.

So how many compound traps?  And BTW, my  school is renowned amongst the HK community as having some very tough fighters, and all of them to a tee were taken down by Rorion, Relson, Royce and submitted quite easily.

Two of the schools top fighters are a black belt and a four stripe blue belt in BJJ under Rickson and Relson respectively.

any martial art style that doesnt practice bjj/sambo/submission wrestling/judo will have serious problems in mma.the other arts do have a 5% chance i guess since 95% of all fights go to a clinch/floor.im not knockin no ones martial art cause i respect them all but im just stating the obvious.the gracies been having these style against style fights in brazil for over 80 years or so and always win,the only reason royce/bjj didnt stay as dominant in the early ufc,s was because people started learning it themselves, once royce started submitting much larger guys in the ufc  in 93 or so everyone wanted to learn bjj,the word was out in the fight world, you either learn bjj or get beat down if you enter mma against a gracie or another bjj guy. .i believe every art has something to take from and add to a fighters arsenal, but when its all said and done bjj is a must to learn if you want to enter the mma game and be a contender imo.the gracies been doing these style against style fights for over 80 years or so and never to my knowledge lost,if a gracie did get beat in those fights in brazil it prolly was against another bjj practioner.they gracies did the style against style thing to prove a point, that in real life situations learning to submit people on the ground or standing works.im sure some people will say as they always do on sherdog is that the last place they want to be in a street fight is on the ground cause if the guy has friends they can kick you ect,but even if your standing and the guy has friends your still gonna get your ass beatin up,people got to stop watching so many van damn movies cause some people believe some guy can really kick the crap out of 7 or 10 pretty tough dudes.im not talking about 7 or 10 nerdy guys who never had a fight in thier life and freeze up in the first sign of danger,im talking about guys like yourselves that been around the block afew times and scrapped on pavement,in the ring,in prison ect.theres no way in hell any black belt from any art is gonna stop 10 of you dudes bum rushing him,he would be done in 20 seconds.same goes for bjj,if 10 of you guys on here that train in mma charged rorion he would get the worst for wear, will some of you get afew limbs broken,oh yeah, but im just making a point.no art is gonna beat abunch of guys but as far as style against style ill take the submission ground fighter anyday over any other NON ground fighting style, thanks for reading my long ass posts, i really enjoy the mma scene and can talk about it for hours on end.ive met alot of fighters and heard tons of funny and sometimes not so funny behind the scenes stuff, ill be sharing everything for the guys like myself on these boards who like hearing about some of the behind the scene stuff.
