close grips with the ez curl bar
« on: March 26, 2009, 08:49:57 AM »
Do you guys use this type of bar for triceps (close grips press)?

How heavy do you guys go on this exercise?

I don't typically use heavy weight with this movement.  I would focus on keeping your elbows relatively close to your torso in order to recruit your triceps more...

145 for 8!!   ;D

I only weigh 170 though.  I've always liked these, a lot of people will tell you that they're bad for the wrists, elbows, etc. but if your body suits them, then there's no reason not to be using them.

i could never get my triceps to work on close grip bench, unless my hands were so close that if fucked my hands/wrists.... but then one day i got high before i worked otu and i instantly realised the way to use triceps instead of chest/shoulders....for me, hand grip is inside the shoulders, but outside the pecs. right in the sweet spot, then you low the bar down while rubbing the inside of your tris up against your side/lats... and then on the way i really focuz on pushing up and out on my elbows with my triceps...while keeping my arm path of motion tucked in close to my sides...    that really helsp..

as far as the weight goes, it depends, i can go as hevay as 275 or as light as 135

Can't see that vid too well, but i never found standard close-grips that effective. Better to me are smith close-grips, e-z curl close grips and close-grips on a leg press machine. Decline or flat bench.

Those are not close grips. Those are Kaz Presses.
You start the motion similar to the finish of a CGBP, but you bring the bar down like you would for a skullcrusher.

Those have been known under different names such as California Presses for decades, and are similar also to JM Presses.

That's a poor video, doesn't at all show the correct ROM.

Most of these closer-grip triceps pressing exercises are more effective in terms of development when using a Smith.

"Hello Adam,

The Kaz press is similar to a skull crusher or JM press. We do these in a smith machine (which i think is useless other than this exercise) and the bar lined up above your clavicle bones. Grip the bar slighty narrower than a bench grip. I actually like to move my grip around with each set. Lower the bar until it is about 6 inches above your clavicle and then push back up. Remember to keep the elbows tuck in tight. This is a great exercise for the inner tricep.

take care,
Chad"
