since protien is the building block of muscle building (along with a few other things) yeah i'd say it's important.. and quality protien is even better. The more bioavailability you have at your body's disposal the better!
nitrean from atlarge nutrition is a solid choice for an all around protien complex..but there are many good choices out there. NEVER lay off the food for strictly supplements though.. they're called supplements for a reason and they are there to supplement your diet.
