Family Guy went to shit years ago. The episodes before it went off the air the first time are so much funnier than the newer ones that it's a joke.

Some of the jokes in family guy are funny. But you can only watch so many episodes before you notice the lack of structure and story to them.

That's why I love South Park. When they go all out they're even more inappropriate(and funnier) than FG while still having a good story line and even though it's a comedy show they usually leave you with a well thought out political statement that makes you think.

i'm pretty sure the writers of family guy are "in on the joke" that their show is very "hacky" (as they would say in the comedy world)

I think the whole point of FG is to NOT have structure. They have a storyline or plot just because it makes sense to have one, and because it would probably be pretty hard to shop a "stand up cartoon comedy" to any networks.
Family Guy, I got into the show about a year ago. A junkie roommate of mine used to watch it, and I never thought I wanted to see the show due to the title. I happened to be in her room one night while the show was playing and heard about 5min of jokes, and was just laughing hilariously. I kept saying "I can't believe they'd go there and say that...and the networks let them?!"
Anyway, I think the writers know exactly what they're doing, and are all about pushing the envelope. They just want to be able to say things on TV that nearly every person thinks, but does not say for one reason or another. And being a cartoon, they can take that to another level without as many negative ramifications as being said by live actors.

Hmm that's a good point. As said I do laugh at a lot of the FG stuff but in the end I prefer South Park. Just boils down to personal preference.

I like South Park, but I found that show more hit & miss than FG...again just preference.
My favorite SP episode was years ago, the one with Token being discriminated against, Cartman goes to prison, and they speak Pig Latin. I think it was Stan that went off on some rant about "if we don't get Cartman outta here, we're all going to be totally screwed!!!" I only really caught the last line and remember (and use it all the time) {spelled phonetically} "oh-dily oo-scrayed!"
