hmmmm well I think especially in our society in general most ppl feel that men are supposed to be confident. A job for a man is one way of defining themselves as we are supposed to be the bread winners. So in areas where one doesnt feel confident I think its natural to fake it for anyone for that matter male or female but especially for men. Our society does not reward men for being vulnerable in public very often, if you go up to a woman timid and reserved you wont get as many numbers as you would approaching with confidence. If you go ask your boss for a raise or promotion very timidly and passively youre not going to get it as many times as you would if you say you feel you deserve a raise or promotion with confidence and a sense of entitlement.
what was the authors wording if you dont mind?
Again, good and interesting comments in this thread.
Here is one of the Poll Questions in that chapter:
Regardless of how successful you are in your current job, which statement most closely describes your feelings about your work life?
- I try to perform well and look as competent as possible, when inside I sometimes feel insecure and am concerned about others' opinion of me and my abilities.
- I always feel secure in my abilities and rarely consider what others think of me.
