Need help with my back
« on: September 08, 2010, 05:15:00 PM »
I know this looks like it would belong in injury and rehab but i think its best posted here. I recently had a spinal fusion of the L-5 through S-1 vertabrea and there fine BUT i need a routine for back specifically lumbar region that wouldnt aggrivate them to much and still alow for optimal growth, Ive been lifting for almost ten years on and off now but havent had to deal with anything quite like this before thanks for ANY help guys really appreciate it.

Cool thats what ive been thinking is that i could prob just get back to it as normal ( For the most part ) But just getting VERY impatient with the stiffness loss of strength in the area and just REALLY wanna be back to normal, So i guess what im asking is how do i strengthen up my lower back without be able to deadlift? All im advised to do is the hyperextension machine and to only go from neutral position to leaned back and return to neutral.

Never had complete spinal fusion but did have major back surgery on L4 & L5. All while in college my senior year. Injury can during the final football game of the regular season. Lucky I played at a school that was listed as one of the better college medical and teaching centers in the US.

After the operation my back was as stiff as a board and had light rehab for a couple of months. That was very suckie and painful.  When I started to work on my own I used the GoodMorning exercise, building up the stretch and weight very slowly. It was a minor miracle how much it improved my lower back. Later I included Romanian DL's. 3 to 4 months later I think my back was stronger than before the back injury. All this is only a suggestion to PL69, but the results were exceptional for me. Good Luck.

Another benefit of GM'ing style exercises is that it calls into play the important ham's. You will get a muscle involvement and stretch from the whole chain of rear leg muscles; ankles, calves, hams, hip/butt. And also adjust the back to having a weight on the shoulders. Hyper X's will not do that. Though you could, at some point, throw in hyper X's.

GM'ing are an extension exercise, though some lifters use them as a successful power movement. All depends on the foot spacing and amount of knee bend. Can also do GM'ing while sitting on a bench crossways. A more advance form is doing them while kneeling.

May also consider working the very important abs hard while retraining the lower back. They help with a more stable function of the lower back. And can help a recovering back injury rather quickly. Good Luck.

Long torso- set the footing a little wider and the knee bend a little more. I'm 6'2 and that works very well for balance and leverage.

If one puts a 2x4 or a pair of 45's in front of you, and you place the toes on it, a much better stretch on the calves & hams/hips will be obtained. Though not always meant for extra heavy weight on the bar (300-350 or above). Works well for guy's into serious sports.   Just to mention, ham/glute/hips should be all trained together. Squats and hams trained in the same workout for example. Only common sense. Good Luck.

Clean calories, light and long cardio/aerobics, cleaner eating, light and longer cardio....

Find something that doesnt cause you pain (even if you want to strap your wrists to a pulldown bar)= rep out like you are doing cardio

Stick to whatever weight workouts you are able to do without injuring yourself, and use the bodybuilding protocol (progressively heavier weights/ overload and adaptation)

Drink lotsa water...

Use some "supplemental" help- and don't give up.

Good excersise you could try is the combined row/hyperextension which is shown here by Werner Gunthor.

Start with light weights - perhaps bar only IMO.
