Why is it a “scandal” for high profile women to be seen wearing the same dress or article of clothing more than once?  Or to be seen wearing the same dress as another woman?  Unless you are Oprah or Meg Whitman, no woman can afford to wear an article of clothing only once, but the press and celebrity watchers love to mock women who are seen or photographed wearing the same article of clothing more than once.  And who can buy a one of a kind dress?  What gives?

And what’s with dresses that cost at or above $5000?  How often could you possibly have occasion to wear something like that in order to justify the cost?  Sure, a wedding dress is a special occasion, but I have seen party dresses, cocktail dresses, and evening gowns that cost that much.  What gives?  Ladies, does any of this make sense to you?

I've never understood that either, but have fallen into the trap.  I'll wear the same outfit/dress more than once but try not to with the same group of people.  Being seen in the same dress as someone else at the same event could be a little embarrassing, but at separate events - big deal   I think the media/paparazzi makes it a bigger deal than it is

Being seen wearing the same dress as someone else is only embarassing if it looks better on her than it does on you. Fortunately for me, ...that's never happened to me.

It depends. When we're talking upwards of $5,000, that's crossing the line.
Understand the average woman may not lead a lifestyle that would justify this expense, but some do.

I'll spend no more than $1,500 on a gown, and it has to pay for itself as well be a tax write off to justify.

Celebs get paid to wear those dresses.  They must fight off designers and then choose whatever and whomever they want...  They go for 'go-see's' and 'fittings'.

Then after that, they have differing tax categories:  if you can't sit down in it it's just for show and is a tax write-off.  If you can sit down in it, it's for work and therefore is taxable, but in a lowish category.



If they're iconic, they get put in museums (the gowns, I mean

sometimes they get given them, (when they're custom made).  Often they just take them, don't give them back.  If the dress is good the designer gets a few pix in mags and maybe more clients


As for wearing it previously:  Google Princess Diana, she did an amazing job recycling outfits for various occasions.  I also had a friend who dyed her wedding dress black, ripped the hem off to knee length and wore it to her father's funeral wake which was immediately following her divorce.
