Any news on Robby?
« on: February 17, 2019, 11:01:00 AM »
He posted hospital pix on Instagram. Had an oxygen mask on. Was talking about sickle cell and no posts since.

It was a very modest 'ask' of $7k, and it seems The Prince is well-loved, as it's pulled in double that in 2 weeks - and it's still open if any generous GetBiggers have the Philanthropy gene...

It seems that sadly this was how his Father* passed away, so let's hope the transfusion programme gets him into remission soon.  It looks like they've got a suitable source(s) as he's doing/has done the oxygenation work

*  (Edit/insert: I just thought of something - I think this might actually be one of those (seemingly very) rare occasions where the problem really is caused by a genetic predisposition!  :D)

There was talk of heart problems with him back in his prime but they never elaborated. Wonder if it was the same problem he has now. Read sickle cell causes heart problems.

Have to admit I was pretty ignorant of various indicators of this disease, so a quick Google tells me you might be onto something... Since the McKidney/Piano bombshells any mention of the left ventricle stands out to me - that, and the mention of 'increased longevity' (77 year old bodybuilder, anyone?)

"Cardiovascular Abnormalities in Sickle Cell Disease
Mark T. Gladwin, MD
Vandana Sachdev, MD

...with increased longevity, cardiovascular complications are increasingly evident, with the notable development of a progressive proliferative systemic vasculopathy, pulmonary hypertension (PH) and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction. Pulmonary hypertension is reported in autopsy studies and numerous clinical studies have shown that increased pulmonary pressures are an important risk marker for mortality in these patients. In epidemiological studies, the development of PH is associated with intravascular hemolysis, cutaneous leg ulceration, renal insufficiency, iron overload and liver dysfunction. Chronic anemia in sickle cell disease results in cardiac chamber dilation and a compensatory increase in left ventricular mass. This is often accompanied by left ventricular diastolic dysfunction which has also been a strong independent predictor of mortality patients with sickle cell disease."

Let's hope this is all BS...

Oh, if only GetBig had a resident cardiac specialist on the boards to give us an informed take on this situation *cough* *Walter* *cough*....
