The most effective part of hacks is the upper 2/3 ROM, which can be done without aggrevating the knees. Also keeps the tension on more effectively.

Knee pain's more pronounced with barbell hacks; hack machines on a diagnal aren't as stressful.

Have you tired putting your feet farther ahead than you usually do, meaning the stance which causes the knee pain?
It solved my problem.

I've tried a variety of stances and that exercise just doesn't feel right. Maybe its the machine at my gym itself.  ???

few years back I obtained some great mass of the following leg workout:

Front Squats
Box Squats
Leg Presses
Walking Lunges
Lying Leg Curl

follow this with one giant set at the end with bb squats, leg press, leg ext and lying leg curl and it will do good

Good choices. Reducing the number of exercises to 3 including the curl, and rotating the rest in over time would work as well from my experience.

I'll do hacks as a second excercise before leg-press.
