great movie, but im always amazed how bad the main guys acting is, and how the movie remains great regardless.

Probably because they surrounded them with good character actors. The prison scenes are priceless, the different cultures, etc. Benjamin Bratt was very good, especially from the middle of the film onwards... he is racked with guilt because he knows he is partly responsible for Miklo's path through life.

The story is as original as it gets, white-skinned half-breed becomes chief of Mexican country-wide prison gang... noone makes movies like that these days.

On Blood in, Blood Out , yeah, Damian Chapa is bad. This, and Street Fighter were probably the highlights of of his career, now he sort of stays in the direct to video realm. The rest of the cast was pretty great though.

One movie I thought never got its due was Bullet with Mickey Rourke. Not a great, great film, but a b movie classic -

.

Makes a good pair with -
.

On the foreign side -

Johnnie To's (Triad) films were a very good pair of mob films  (both full films below) -

Also Kitano's -

Outrage - www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXLuvZY8bMU .

Naw, he does look a bit like Isiah Whitlock though, but too light.

Billy Bob Thorton is a surprising one -

.

Also Tom Towles, who played Red Ryder. I wouldn't have thought the guy who played Otis could pull off that aggressive a character -
