Facing your shadow
« on: November 23, 2019, 08:37:05 AM »
Carl Jung spoke about the "shadow" which was the dark side of all humans, what every single one of is is capeable of.

All the evils of the world that are perpetrated lie within everyone.

he argues that being moral isnt really an achievement until you have seen the dark side of yourself and then making a choice to keep it under control

Very much so! We must confront our dark penumbral inheritance, which dwells in the collective unconscious.

The following comes to mind:

Yes, the Jungian archetype is that of the Face-Fucking Trickster, and the white towel I'm wearing symbolizes the absorbency of the collective unconscious which wipes away all shame and most of the spooge. Here, I'll write it down.

Jung was just giving advice on how to defeat Yates.

It was a complete failure.

Disagree. Serious mental cases: bipolar, scitzo - they need meds.

But I agree they over prescribe shit for everyday troubles

I tend to agree with the shadow concept, from personal experience.

At about 20 years old while in college I was working nights at a convenience store.

I ended up working Halloween, of all nights. As a coincidence, the owner had stopped into the store about 11:30 pm to check how things were going and to shoot the shit with me. But just before midnight, two masked guys came in, brandishing a handgun and a long knife and demanding money. At first I thought it was a joke but that quickly changed.

I was instructed to empty the cash register (no problem - I wasn't stupid) and then go to the store safe. Apparently these guys knew the deal with a convenience store. I said I didn't have the combination so they yelled at the other guy (unbeknownst to them the owner) and he started crying like a baby that he didn't know it either. This was practically a movie style robbery.

After a bit of screaming the bad guys told us to lie face down on the floor. Now I don't know about you but that is never a good idea. I had read a story some months early about a nearly identical robbery in the same city I was in where a guy lying on the floor was killed execution style. So I figured in that split second I wasn't going to lie down.

That agitated them a bit, lol. Wasn't funny at the time of course but now I think WTF! They yelled they were going to kill me and my response was something like "go fuck yourself". One guy pulled the trigger on his gun but it jammed. Talk about lucky. Or a shitty gun which was more likely the reason.

The guys immediately split with the money from the register and I called the police. The owner was still a mental mess so he was of no use.

Long story short, the two guys were caught that night. The detective told me later they had done about 10 robberies in the city over the past few months and luckily they had gotten there fast enough this time that they found one, higher than a kite, less than a half mile away walking in an open lot. Knife and all!

I testified in open court against the two of them- and as it turned out the only witness who would. They ended up getting over 20 years each. In court I remember looking at them and suddenly replaying all the events in my head. It wasn't a dream anymore. They would have killed me if they could have. The rage started that very moment. No fear. It was an anger I have never felt so intensely. I wanted to kill them both right then and there.

It has never gone away, years later.

You were smart not laying down or you might not be here now.  If they are going to kill you let it be on your feet where you have a fighter's chance.  This is also why you never get in the car even at gun point as they want to neutralize your ability to fight back and make noise to attract attention as well.

You are completely right Humble. You can never give in during a threatening situation. You end up giving up even more of any power you have left.

I think you are missing the point, the shadow is your own dark side, to come to terms with the fact that the worst serial killer in history could be you given the right/wrong set of circumstances.

I kept my post short to keep from boring people..

The dark side is now there where it never had been. Until that event I could never imagine hurting someone, letting alone killing anyone. Those days are gone. This isn't about getting some new kind of courage. It's about a wall that breaks down in your brain. The one that stops things.

Since that time in the course of daily life I have had a few experiences that made me realize everything was different now. There is no gray area anymore.

I missed one of the last lines in your original post, it makes sense now...

If anyone just sat down and thought about a random senseless killing they knew about and tried to put themself in the position of the killer it wouldnt take long to get there if they were honest with themselves.

I'm certain that every human driven by some events good or evil can never know to what extent he might act on.
Once you have been in a situation were all of your potential has been seen or experienced (bad or good), then you can have a better understanding of your limits or  "morals"!
The church or religion is the biggest farse for people to believe they are good.
Yes- we all have "it" in us.  Keep the monster in control once is woken is different cup of tea all together...
