Squad" member Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) is now being investigated by the Department of Justice for misuse of federal spending in private security.
On Monday, the DOJ announced a subpoena on the floor of Congress without detailing who it was for.
A watchdog group, the nonpartisan Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT), has demanded that the Federal Election Commission investigate the $62,000 that she paid to her now husband, Cortney Merritts, for security from her campaign account, according to the Daily Mail.
When asked about the security before in an interview, Bush was adamant that she needed to spend the money on security. In the ethics complaint, FACT executive director Kendra Arnold wrote, "It appears Rep. Bush's campaign may have made payments for services that were unnecessary or above fair market value because of her personal relationship with the payee."
If so, these payments would qualify as either impermissible payments to a family member or an impermissible gift," Arnold added.
Bush was married to Merrits in Feb. 2023, according to a copy of her office's press release that was posted online.
The congressional representative has spent $756,000 on security since she was elected in 2020 and it has also been her largest expense.
Another ethics complaint surrounding Bush was filed by FACT on Jan. 23 for “misusing social media accounts” along with “Nancy Pelosi of California,... Jamaal Bowman of New York, Sean Casten of Illinois, Greg Casar of Texas, Maxwell Alejandro Frost of Florida, Ted Lieu of California, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, and Ritchie Torres of New York.”
