San Francisco has become a shit hole over the last two decades. Terrible homeless problem and heavily polluted. Virtually no clean air unless you drive over the Golden Gate bridge with the windows down. Not to mention a ridiculous cost of living. I don't know why anyone would want to live there. The streets and alley ways smell like piss and shit every where you go.

Not what this guy is reporting. Shoplifting less than $950 under CA law is petty theft. Generally speaking the DA in SF doesn’t have the resources to prosecute these crimes. However, you can be arrested for petty theft and convicted. It’s a judgment call by the police and prosecutors based on your prior record and other factors. To say people are walking into stores and walking out with a $949 of goods is a gross mischaracterization of what’s happening. Unless you live in your basement and have no idea what’s happening in the real world you wouldn’t believe this. Even the minimum wage security guard in this video admits the police come but doesn’t know what really happens. Do you think major retailers would be paying the outrageous retail rents in SF if they were losing money?

Of course there are no truly free markets. The “free market” is just a BS conservative politician talking point. The liberals have theirs too. That’s not to say free market economics of the type espoused by Friedman, et al., is not a real thing but those concepts are completely divorced from the actual practice of conservative Republican politicians.

The market is controlled by the elites who set and control the agenda. Rent control/stabilization is fine with them b/c they’re still making a ton of money renting and developing property in cities like NY and SF. They whittle it away when margins get too tight but they have to give their political pawns a little something to give the unwashed masses.
