I trained with Mark Spindler in the 90's, he was a pretty good defensive lineman for the lions and he couldn't get up 285 on the flat press. He had impressive leg press numbers, though.
well, some jackass claimed that Reggie bush couldn't dl 450 . . . here's a few things to remember:
1. He put up 24 (IIRC) reps of 225 at the combine . . . which means that on a day when he did a whole bunch of other shit, he still demonstrated that he's put his hours in lifting weights.
2. He's a 200+ lber at 7-9% bf . . . again indicating that he's put his hours in at the gym.
3. He's probably done a few power cleans at USC.
4. He's one of the most explosive athletes on the planet . . . red "fast twitch" muscle fiber is more conducive to high maxes than it is to endurance (see no. 1).
5. Yes, I've seen "weak" d-linemen before, but they were always strong on stuff like power cleans and squats.
I'm curious, did Mark Spindler care about his flat bench? or did he just throw in a set now and again . . . indicating that w/o seriously training he could still bench around 285.
