Why do certain folks get off on ripping on MMA?
« on: August 19, 2006, 12:28:12 PM »
I don't get it.  Everyone wants to pit boxing vs. MMA.  I boxed for 8 years of my life and I respect MMA a lot.  IMO it's two different worlds completely and both can coexist together.

It seems like pro boxing is in a real fragile state right now, with the heavyweight division lacking the drawing power that it always has in the past, and with some fighters robbing fans opportunities to see mega fights that could breath new life into boxing over money issues.  The 130- 160 lb fighters are whats keeping boxing in the mix right now.  Boxing just lacks the characters that it used to have, I am talking about the characters that make the casual boxing fan fork over $50-$60.  DLH is already eyeing retirement, so is Pac-Man, Hopkins is gone, Gatti is thinking of hanging 'em up, RJJ's days are numbered as well.  All of the big name guys that made boxing big in the last ten years are getting old.  MMA offers something new and fresh, plus the fighters aren't all about the money. (although they should be because they train 3x as hard as boxers)  I personally, am a die hard MMA fan, and a Die hard boxing fan, unfortunately, some people have chosen sides.  I just like to watch a good fight.

in boxing, the best fights are in the lighter divisions. Most people are only interested in the HW division and its in a pathetic state right now. MMA is building a reputation and filling the gap which boxing has left. Truth be told, most boxers would be put in the hospital quite easily if the went into MMA. A 22-26 year old Mike Tyson would be a great exception, i think he would have literally killed someone in the old MMA era of no rules.

He has a fight coming up against Genki Sudo in K-1 Hero's and he will probably end up getting subbed again with relative ease.
