How to get to clinch or takedown without getting hit
« on: September 18, 2006, 07:29:51 PM »
What is the best way to get to a clinch or takedown without getting hit in the face? Are you better off getting low stance and shooting from a distance or coming in Hands Up to clinch? I have a wrestling background and I am fighting a boxer. I feel that a clinch offers best way to submit throw to a choke. But I am worried I will get hit coming in.

thanks

Does your opponent know you are primarily a wrestler?  If he does, then he would be expecting you to shoot on him rather quickly, if he is a boxer expect an uppercut.  The best way to get a take down or close in on an opponent is to set it up with strikes.  You don't have to stand and have a slugfest with the guy, just work your way into his range and shoot off a 2 or 3 punch combo maybe a 1-2 or a 1,2,3 (if you fight out of an orthodox stance it's always best to end a combo with a left)  you don't have to knock him out, the point is, the punches are meant to distract your opponent enough to bring the his attention away form being taken down, then take your shot or clinch up and go for an upperbody throw or whatever.  They is no sure fire way to avoid getting hit, it's a fight, all I can say is don't just shoot in right off the bat unless you are real confident in your wrestling.  Another thing you can do if you have a basic understanding of boxing, is stay on the outside with footwork and wait for him to commit to a punch and then shoot.

very true.

u HAVE TO get in and do your thing which means u MUST force the action, give him room and you're going to have a bad day.

if you're thinking too much about avoiding his strike you will hesitate, tighten up and then he'll nail you.

i agree with aforementioned, in any case go in with strikes, even dummies, just to get you in.

good luck.

This is great advice!

Excellent advice from all the responses. I agree especially with waiting on your opponent to commit to a punch, then shoot him. You can engage him, get him going, then shoot his a$$ while he's flat footed trying to throw bombs.

Instead of worrying about getting hit, learn how to be prepared to take a shot, put a sock or tennis ball under your chin and hold it to your chest to learn how to keep that chin tucked away until it's second nature. You are going to get hit when you fight, you might as well be ready to eat one so you don't fall apart like some fighters actually do when they get chin checked.

If you get yourself caught up in those situations where the other fighter is taller when you shoot him and/or you can't turn him or scoop him easily because he's bending down..etc, stand straight up instantly, wrap up his torso (like a body to body suplex), turn him to either side until he is balancing on one foot and sweep that leg with your opposite leg and slam his ass or just pull him over like a judo toss.

If you are strong enough..while you have him clinched in your belly to belly..... if it isn't to high (your chest to his stomach) pick his punk a$$ up and drop him on his head.

You were/are a wrestler, so you should know to perform these moves with explosiveness. Hopefully the other guy will be ko'd from the landing, dislocate something or knock the air out of him.

You are going to get hit.  Where you get hit, and how you protect yourself is another story.  I like shooting under a three punch/kick combo.  E.G check kick, throw cross, lead hand hook, uppercut followed by a single on the far side leg.

good advice from everyone.... yeah bud your in a fight, regardless of what happens your gonna get hit, more then once... No one wants to get hit but to give some, you gotta take one.. and sometimes taking a shot where you want it is a great way to shoot. Set your guy up and best of luck to you... let us know how you do..... hell shoot us a link with some of the action..... i wanna see the fight....as a wrestler my advice to you, Elbows and KNEES.. if there allowed..... And dont think about what move your gonna do or punch to throw. once you think about it, its already gone. go in relaxed and just fight your own fight DONT FIGHT HIS FIGHT MAKE HIM FIGHT YOURS,,,,,,,,,,

best way to get in i've found without getting it hit is to throw a fake straight or at least get him to cover up for few moments with some punches and move in.

Now, this is my kinda thread

Let's say your opponent is right-handed.

Start with your hands in a prayer-like position. When your opponent throws that big right hand bomb, entend your arms as you would if you were using a breast stroke in swimming, but make sure your left hand is inside of his right. At the same time, step in towards his left side.

If all goes well, you should end up in a clinch with your left hand controlling his right bicep, and your right hand around his waist.

From there you have a few options:

Step  across with your right foot and attempt a hip throw (O- Goshi).

Extend your right foot, sit on your left, and pull his right hip down and back (Tani Otoshi)

Shrug with your right shoulder. This will send him forward, so you can get to his back. From there you can try a waistlock takedown or a suplex.

______________

A word of caution. When your in that clinch position, your opponent is in position to execute an uchi mata. So, be wary of his left leg.
