Strikeforce Playboy Show To Be Streamed Free Online at Yahoo Sports

If you watch Gilbert Melendez compete, you could be excused for believing he was an Olympic gymnast.

He's one of the most acrobatic fighters in mixed martial arts with a style that defies convention.

He's got a wrestling background, but he's hardly a fighter who looks to spend every possible moment grappling on the mat. He's a little of this and a lot of that and, like a gymnast, Melendez can do the all-around.

The unbeaten Strikeforce lightweight champion will face Tetsuji Kato in a non-title fight Saturday at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif., on a card that will be streamed live exclusively on Yahoo! Sports beginning at midnight Eastern/9 p.m. Pacific.

Strikeforce will stream its Sept. 29 “Strikeforce at the Mansion” event live to a worldwide audience exclusively at Yahoo! Sports.

Strikeforce will be the first mixed martial arts event held at the world-famous Playboy Mansion. The Strikeforce fight card will be headlined by the return of undefeated lightweight (155-pound) champion Gilbert Melendez (12-0), as well as the Strikeforce debut of middleweight (185-pound) star Joe “Diesel” Riggs (26-9), who will battle fan-favorite Eugene Jackson (15-7-1).

Yahoo! Sports will begin streaming the Strikeforce fights at 9 p.m. PT / 12 a.m. ET. Yahoo! Sports users will have free, live access to the main card.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for fans around the world to watch these fights, which they otherwise might not have been able to see live,” said Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker.  “Working with Yahoo! Sports brings mixed martial arts directly to our fans for free, and gets them into the Playboy Mansion, too. It’s a great partnership that delivers for fans around the world.”

In other action on the main card, Strikeforce lightweight star Josh Thomson (34-2) will square off with former United States marine Adam Lynn (11-7).  Bobby Southworth (7-4) will take on Canadian Bill “The Butcher” Mahood (15-5-1) in a light heavyweight (205-pound) contest, while undefeated heavyweight contender and former WWE star Daniel Puder (5-0) will be challenged by Richard Dalton (3-2).

Following the live stream, the event will remain available for viewing on Yahoo! Sports, free of charge, for a period of 30 days via on demand service

BEVERLY HILLS, CALIF. – The "Strikeforce at the Mansion" fighters on Friday weighed-in for Saturday's event at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif. All of the fighters made weight for their respective bouts.

Though there are several Strikeforce champions fighting on this card, none of their bouts are in contest of their respective titles.

With many last-minute signings, there are also several fights being fought at weights that do not fall within recognized weight classes or "catch weights." Matt Lee and Jorge Masvidal are fighting at a catch weight of 160 pounds. Falaniko Vitale and Ron Fields are competing at 195 pounds, while Dewey Cooper and Adam Smith will fight at a limit of 210 pounds.

An interesting side note is Josh Thomson, one of the more popular fighters competing for Strikeforce. In the past 24 hours, he had to cut weight from 179 pounds to make weight for his 155-pound lightweight bout with Adam Lynn. Thomson made it to within the one-pound tolerance, weighing in at 155.5 pounds and the fight is on.
