True, but very much depending on how you are.
The german south and Austria are great, also France has some good pastries. Italy sucks as far as i know, Spain isn't that special as well (please correct me if i'm wrong).
Best pastires i have had in my life though where european style pastries in Japan.
I don't know man. Ferrara's Italian Pastry shop (ok, in New York) is probably the best known patisserie in the world. It's pretty hard to top a good cannoli (Sicilian), and sfoliatelli are some of the most involved pastries around. Also, the inventor of puff pastry Claudius Gele was a Frenchman but he chose Florence as his adopted home. Italy can't compete with France but they still hold their own.
