Does fat make you fat?
« on: March 13, 2010, 12:24:09 PM »
I understand that too many carbs and sugar make you put on weight but lets say I was dieting with 80/20 fat vs 95/5 lean meat (1st number is lean 2nd is fat content) and add a little cheese but carbs and sugar is non existent.  Will that affect me getting lean?  I understand too much isn't good for cholesterol

calories in vs. calories out = weight gain/weight loss

if you eat fat, fat has calories...and your body has to burn that fat youve eaten before it can burn bodyfat.

too much fat isnt necessarily bad for cholestrol. and carbs dont necessarily make you fat(in fact if your trying to get as big as possible, while at the same time keeping fat gains to a minimum...high carbs is the best diet)

The average caloric intake back in the 1700s was around 6000 calories,in the 1800s it was around 4500,in the late 20th century it was around 2500 yet more and more people now suffer from morbid obesity than at any other time in our recorded history.

what about decreased insulin sensitivity over time ???

no such thing, unless your inactive or overeating or a combination of the two.

and even then, its completely reversable, unless your an insulin dependant diabetic..

when muscle glycogen dips below peak capacity, insulin sensitivity starts to increase. one day of low carbs, or one hard workout, and BOOM now yoru insulin sensitive.  :)

Fat does not make you fat.
Carbs make you fat, especially sugar based ones.
This is the main reason the Keto diet works.  Without sugar, and only enough complex carbs to keep your body functional your body will not be able to store the fat.

The biggest mistake people make is cutting the fat out of their diet, as this will cause Test levels to drop and make it harder to keep on lean muscle mass.  Keep your fat and protein up and keep your carbs below 50 grams / day ( complex only )

If this were true what about the famous post show rebound every bodybuilder speaks of where muscle is put on at an incredibly high rate for a period of time.

Where did you get these stats from and why was calorie intake higher back then?

In the 1700s,90% of the population lived in rural areas, fields were still worked by hand, roads were cleared for travel between villages by hand, the labor was intensive and grueling,in the 1800s people began to migrate toward the cities as they were growing and expanding up until the industrial revolution when machines began to take over the tasks,of manufacturing and food production. In the 20th century, technology has advanced to the point where machines worked by remote control performs 90 % of the tasks that would have been otherwise performed by human labor, therefore the body doesn't need the level of caloric intake to maintain the same level of energy to function in a modern world.

Some how I doubt people back in the 1700s were able to get some 6000 calories / day.  Yes I agree that work was more labor intensive so excess calories were burned off, but the big difference was back then food was still in a very raw unprocessed state.  Today food is often processed and packaged in high fructose corn syrup, meaning it spikes your insulin and goes right to your fat stores.

The average life expectancy in the 1700s was only about 47 yrs.And people rarely if ever drank water for risk of disease, they mostly drank hard cider, beer, and distilled spirits
