Word is Mike collapsed after leaving the stage because his lower body wasn't used to such herculean efforts.

Rory was one of those guys who was always told, and therefore believed, he was a great poser when in reality he was awful. Always looking down and never holding the shots quite right.

Yeah perhaps. But, back in the day at the gym where I worked out, Mike was squating with 700+ lbs, doing reps. I thought he was pretty amazing. Nice personality too.

i can think of several occasions where guys were assholes when they lost and they win their pro card the next year. it's like the judges are scared of another scene so they place the poor sports first.

There is no reason for me to make this up. He was working out at the Matt Dishman community center, which is now and was then a free public gym and weight room on Knott St. in N.E. Portland. This was in the mid 1970's right before he won Mr. Portland in 1976. I also worked out at Matt Dishman at the time. Chuck Amato worked for Portland Parks, managing the weight room.

I think Mike was equally shocked when he placed 4th at the 1987 Mr. Olympia contest to Lee Haney, Rich Gaspari, and Lee Labrada. He was big and in condition but I guess the judges felt Lee and Lee had a better structure and Rich was harder.

lee haney once said in an interview something like mike was the only guy in his era who had the potential (genetics) to be like him but he was lazy and not serious as him so would never be mr. olympia..

He had the height 6'1" but he needed more size to fill out that frame , his legs sucked even for back then his delts , triceps and chest were all fantastic but like DeMey he always looked stringy next to Haney
