In Oregon, classified school employees, folks like school bus drivers, classroom assistants, secretaries and cooks, who only work during the school year are not eligible for unemployment when they are in layoff status. All other workers in this state are eligible for unemployment. This includes itinerant farm workers, folks working in the construction trades and others whose work is generally not of a permanent nature.

That's more like it should be. Ideally, it should be available for those who get laid off from jobs, not fired due to poor work ethic.

As a business owner, i'd rather hang myself than hire almost anyone that is sitting at the welfare office. Most of those people will be disruptive at the workplace. No thanks. I'll pay a little more to keep them away from productive society...

exactly i hate hiring people , if you got two people you hire that are buddies and off the street they stay on there cell gossiping to there baby moma about every stupid incidendent in there lifes. just bullshit ontop of more bullshit. in otherwords you are taking a huge gamble with people these days, there is no urgency to get the job done right or done at all

Work ethic has gone out the window over time. Plus, whether you own a business, or manage one, one of the most time consuming things if you have those type of employees is following up and making sure that the work either got done, or done correctly.

Imagine if unemployment checks in America were eliminate. Think of how motivated people would be to actually work! Do or die situation at that point...

Crime potentially would increase however...

Another problem would be that high school and college kids wouldn't be able to find work anymore. And as a society, we would lose a shitload of potential great workers in the end. Kids with too much time on their hands because there are no part time jobs will get in trouble and go down roads they might not have if they were able to stay busy...I say keep the mentally ill(most welfare people) out of the work force...And leave what jobs there may be to people who want to work...

people suck.
I had a good friend work for me for years, looked after him despite the fact he wasnt willing to put much effort in was always on his phone on facebook, took a week off if hewas hungover.
I gave him loads of left over building materials for his house and he sold them.
Eventually he left cos he thought the grass was greener elsewere and now works long miserable hours for shit money.
Fuck him

I don't have much experience with unemployment insurance, but I thought if you got fired with cause you're unemployment claim could be denied or at least delayed. In other words to collect unemployment insurance, you had to be laid off.  No doubt folks figure out ways around this.

i wonder if these people had fate-less parents if you know what i mean? this behavior gets absorbed by the child and then the child becomes fate-less and short term thinking, pretty sad reality.

it takes work to be positive, some sweat and some tears, the alternative seems fucking miserable

Not always does this happen. My parents lived well but were always in debt and saved nothing for their old age. My stepdad died when he was 65 and he was still working up until his death to supplement his SSI, which probably wasn't very much since he underreported his income most of his working years. My mom lived about three years after he died. She was living off the interest of the proceeds from a life insurance policy she had on my dad and SSI. In those days, money market interest rates were 11%. She also moved in with us, so her expenses were nil.

Unlike my parents, I am very cautious about spending money. My wife and I planned carefully for our retirement years. We have no debts. My wife and I were spendthrifts when we were dating, a few periods of hard times taught us a lesson and we changed our ways.

Although I had a lot of material things as a kid, they usually came with some responsibility too. Furthermore, I knew if I got into trouble, I was on my own. My parents made that very clear to me.

It seems to me a lot of folks play the blame game. Nothing is every their fault, it is always someone or something else which is to blame. I'm a control freak. As such blaming others is like giving up control of my own life. I am responsible for what happens to me and I wouldn't want it any other way.

There is a saying that has been around for years. It reads, "Do what you love and the money will follow." Well, maybe and maybe not. I am not positive the money always follows. On the other hand doing something you hate for 30 years or so really sucks. At least if you do what you love, your enjoying the 8 or more hours everyday you spend doing it. Maybe that is what really counts in the long run.

I know people with great jobs and tons of money who aren't happy. Money doesn't buy happiness. Within reason, if you can make enough money doing something that you enjoy to support yourself and your family, that should be pretty rewarding. Unfortunately, a lot of folks believe they can't be happy without all the latest gadgets, a too big house and a too expensive car. That's just bullshit!
