It's great that he lost the weight, and hopefully has changed his eating habits.
But, it's sad that the nation that always talks about healthy living, has probably the highest obesity rates in the world. And at the same time, said people want to be "accepted" as "normal", when in fact they are killing themselves, and slow suicide is not "normal".
we're a nation of drug addicts, where the drug is sugar. companies pump foods with artificial sweeteners and preservatives, advertise the shit out of sodas, snacks, and candy. kit kat throws a contest for a free nexus 7 if you get the right wrapper. taco bell has a deal with the XBox One. doritos and mountain dew.
they're cheap and readily available, and parents don't want to fight with their kids or deal with whole foods that spoil after a few days so they fill the pantry with shit. they plunk the kid in front of the TV with a huge bowl of lucky charms or maybe they "cook breakfast" and make waffles covered in syrup. then the kids eat that shit whenever possible and get hooked. by the time they're old enough to choose a better diet, it's almost too late. they've become addicted.
can't even get away from it in school. my mother works in an elementary school in a fairly well-off suburb and those kids are given such horrid lunches she literally cannot eat them. it's always pizza or some similar fried/greasy/artificial crap, and chocolate milk. the kids with pack lunches trade whatever they can to get the pudding cups or corn dogs. meanwhile gym classes are getting less strenuous and recess more restricted to avoid "discrimination", so while the food is getting more toxic, they're getting less exercise.
i worked for a group home for teenagers with anger/authority problems, and they went to a charter school. you want a list of the "entrees" these kids got?
- Plate of mac and cheese
- Pile of mini corn dogs
- Bag of doritos with some greasy ground beef and nacho cheese dumped in it
- Nachos and cheese
- Incredibly cheap pizza
- Chicken nuggets (one of the "healthiest" items)
on the side they'd usually get chocolate or strawberry milk and a cookie or ice cream. veggies? please. maybe a spoon of gross-ass green beans or mushy carrots.
frankly it's amazing there aren't more obese people in this country. it's depressing.
