Why is a person with such a strangely demanding hobby not insured?
Nonetheless, all the best and fast recovery.
Because an insurance company would want huge figures to insure you.
They would look at it like a certain claim at some point.

He states that he has insurance, but they are not covering it because he is a "professional" and was competing in his chosen sport during the injury. Pretty bullshit if you ask me, but that's an insurance company for you. I hope he is able to make a recovery, he is a great asset for the sport of powerlifting.

He's a great dude...always ready to help. If anybody comes back its him. I think there will be a few folks who take some sorta joy out of this injury to him.

That's the big one that catches a lot of people. Lots of folks think they'd be covered by existing coverage, but once things like prize money, etc.... gets in the mix, the companies claim you're a pro, and that changes your coverage.

Latest -

"Just leaving the hospital after a long frustrating day for all. Jessica Lilly and I were finally allowed to spend some time with Brandon Lilly after about 5 hours of surgery and another 6 in the recovery room with very little reporting on his progress.

Brandon may have set a world record in ligaments/tendons that needed repairing with tears to both quad tendons, patella tendons, MCLs, meniscus, as well as the left ACL, hamstring tendon and breaking the left knee cap in two.

He is happy to be out of the recovery room now and is thankful for all the messages and posts." .

Also insurance companies seldom cover high risk activities.

Pro sports teams take out insurance policies on players all the time.  My understanding is they are for some of the player's salary guaranteed in their contract, in the event of a major injury.

Not sure how relevant that is here but just wanted to point it out given the insurance-chat.  I imagine they're not the best deal in the world insurance-wise.

I've also heard of players taking out policies on themselves (sort of like disability insurance) but can't think of any specific recent examples.

I'd like to see what a quote for coverage for this could be...with them actually covering everything.

BB thanks for the update.

When I played rugby the club had insurance to cover the players.
I spoke to a private insurance company and he said the premiums to take out cover would be so high you would pay more than they would likely pay out.

You have to wonder if he thought he was covered in the first place. There are places to donate on the "Cube" facebook and via Strong360 if  you're a member.

Lilly requested that the donation pages be taken down.

Seems that they were causing some back biting in the ranks, won't name the lifter, but their girlfriend was posting stuff like this -

Looks like I need to get injured to get a $100k fundraiser started for me. #sorryImnotsorry oh wait… Like everyone else I do have medical bills I'm still paying off. Maybe I will make a page. " .

Lilly is always preaching about strongman...the top guys being much stronger then most top powerlifters. It's his thing to move the sport more towards better all around strength. Coleman never shied away from big weight, kind of a throwback.

Holy shit people suck. I don't know who you're referring to but this guy is a genuine good guy....after this he'll know who his friends really are. There is so much drama these days in everything.

That's the older Brandon Lilly....he did drink a gallon of maple syrup for charity.

BB...never mind I saw some shit on FB...if its true its fucked up. Way to much drama for a squat injury. I hope its the insurance angle and that Chad Wesley Smith is able to come through and take care of most of it.

In terms of being a visual spectacle, I think they should use lighter or wider plates.  That 750lbs on the bar doesn't look nearly as heavy as it actually is.

That is the worst injury short of death, that I've seen at a power meet.

Lots of things probably contributed to this -

1) Weight drop. He was cutting a bit of weight from what I remember.

2) He had changed up his meet strategy from what he was using a few months before.

3) Shoes. He went from a heeled olympic lifting shoe to a flat Reebok power shoe like a beefed up Chuck Taylor. That may seem like a small thing, but it affects set up, the degree of muscles involved, etc....

and of course:

4) Some days just aren't your day, he just didn't look like the normal Lilly you see at meets during the walk out.

This is one of the reasons I've softened on Monolifts over the years, a Mono with safety straps set up, might of saved him from a bit of that damage.

The insurance is a tricky thing, some say he has coverage, some say no, but then there's the sticky wickett of if he does have insurance, will it cover the injury? Some won't cover injuries sustained during a semi - pro  or pro sporting event with prizes.

Anti monolift purist ball-stroking is the most ridiculous part of PLing, the walkout is even more dangerous than the lift and an incorrect setup is going to amplify any injury potential from a missed lift.

The guy is finished, hes never coming back from this. Even as a bench specialist he's screwed without a working knee.

Just think, Single Payer, Universal Healthcare would have taken care of him and he would not have to panhandle his way back to the Squat rack.  I assume you are going to donate 10 dollars to the fund so he can get some listerine and maybe some bandaids?
