Its not hard to understand why these guys are popular. Although they are on drugs, their bodies are more easily attainable by the "average Joe."

Most people dont want to be hardcore competitive bodybuilders. Instead, they want to look good naked, and walk on the beach showing off their bodies. Nothing more. Bodybuilding is not a lifestyle to them.

Being able to relate to someone elses achievements is an important factor for motivation. You can't relate to Ronnie Coleman, but you can relate more to a physique competitor.

This is what most men want to look like

The look is absolutely secondary for the "Youtube"-heroes, there are probably douzens of guys on getbig with a better body. The main point is they're not introvert, boring or lame fucks. They got a big mouth, have fun in life with a decent built and film every second of their lives with a cam and share it with their 100000s followers. When young people see them at the Expo they got the feeling like they're meeting old friends, as they are "with them" each and everyday and know what they did any day of the past year.

A massive IFBB-Pro standing at his booth bored with a bitter face noone gives a shit about. Bodybuilding missed the social media train entirely, and now the bill comes in.

Hulk-smash!

I think in a way its also the same fate Nautilus gyms had.  Everyone thought "Wow I gotta do is use these new exotic machines & I'll look like Casey Viator".  Once reality set in that Nautilus machine's are much harder than barbell exercises and instilled a much deeper state of fatigue (pain) the general public being weak little pussies that they are said "Forget this" & moved on to the next "get built quick & painless" fad.

Pro bodybuilders like Platz, Haney, Yates, Viator, etc., busted they're asses to get they're god-like physiques.  The little kiddy punks don't/can't work ^ THAT hard so they play some mind game w/ themselves to rationalize w/ this "fitness" bullshit for not having the genes or kohonas to work hard.

Well, thats the thing: When youre preparing for the MR. O, you probably cant go out partying like the other guys. All you can do is either film yourself grocery shopping or lifting weights. Other than that, their lives are pretty boring. Even if pro bodybuilders used social media to document their lives, how exciting would it be? Most of it would be eating, sleeping, buying food and training. :-\ :-\

It's age.  We don't realize it, because most of us are 30s and 40s... but the people in their early 20s look at Wheeler and Levrone and they see old bald dudes they've never heard of.  They never had FLEX mag coming in the mail every month, they never sat nervously wondering who was going to take the crown in 98 (?) when Dorian retired and the title was  up for grabs.

Generation selfie has a hard time "liking" anyone over 35.   The old school champs get ignored, and some duck-face idiot taking selfies and making crazy faces while benching 225 on his heavy sets gets all their love.

We see it in other areas.  Younger folks on the beach will spend all night watching a shitty cover band of stoned 20 year olds... and they'll walk right past a group of 50 year olds showing insane playing and the most talent they'd ever have a chance to witness.

Great post and sums it up quite well. LOL, "over 35" when I'm now over 55, so I really don't relate to the young selfie crowd.

I'm going to stay positive and hope for the best when it comes to bodybuilding.
If nothing else we can do our own thing in the gym, go to real BB contests and avoid posting stupid duck faced gym selfies. :D

The kids are right: much better to look like a very fit 6 ft 3 fitness dude, than to resemble a bloated pregnant 5 ft 6 G4P guy in a thong

The key is not just the different look, the Aesthetics/Zyzz-like guys have fun in life. They go out, party, bang hot chicks, and still have a great built. The life of a competitive BB is miserable (eating, sleeping, injecting, isolation...).

Wasn't you intention when u started working out to have a better, more fun life than a miserable one? Maybe the trend isn't too bad.

Here is the thing, Zyzzz needed the body to do it. He wasn't popular, wasn't anything until he hopped on the gas.

People want to be around a winner. The thing is, many a social media star is about the image of being a winner. Accomplish nothing, yet make people believe that you are something. And that is attractive to folks who want the fantasy, yet don't want to put in the time. And many were introverts and some still are, they just either got the body and became extroverts or they still are.

Remember what Dorian said? If still holds true, "you can take a insecure 140 pound man and build him up to 240 pounds, but he still is an insecure man." Same thing, just not as extreme a weight gain.

And if women like it, men will do it. If it attracts attention from women, more men will do it. If something attracts more attention from men, more women will do it.

Social media has allowed the chaff to feel like the wheat.

Still attracts schmoes more

Average girls are attracted to some one like a mark walhberg type physique when he was doing Calvin Klein ads
true. The plus is that more people are getting fit. The minus is of course the drug usage---the short cut to get there. More people will go that route. Which could mean higher demand for said drugs, which could mean a bigger market, and possibly better quality drugs (?).
Also, this goes hand in hand with gen X and Gen Y narcissism, making ourselves (themselves) into real life demigods.

But, this all this has it's roots in bodybuilding. If Jim Manion and the judges were smart, they would have stopped rewarding the gut-monsters yrs ago. And rewarded more svelte waisted phyisques, and marketed them in social media more. Instead of the freak factor.

Get IFBB and Musclemania together or have Phil and Ulisses in a booth together and YouTube vids as well.

What we all should do since we have a lot of interesting characters on getbig is to start a getbig channel documenting our lives and film every bit of it

With our vast knowledge of cars, nutrition, Wall Street stocks, flipping tires, UFC fighting skills, limo services, picking up hoes, electricity, bit coins, basile business savvyness, we can be unstoppable on social media

Would be hilarious. And actually Joon could be useful. He can have one of "lady friends" be around and interview and let it just be a chaotic scene of Getbiggery.

Bodybuilding ain't dead! It's just changing! And has a new name!
A name that may be more appeasing to the general public and definitely more inviting to physique contenders.

PARKER, I agree with your statement above.....

Except for a small part of one comment concerning Manion's "late decision" to initiate this new Physique Decision.

I don't have any accurate or inside details on the NPC's decision to sanction physique events .... but it was a damn smart decision even though it was a few years late in coming.

Buy it did come! And that's what counts!

But I think that there were some pretty valid reasons for 'being a bit late'.

And here are some guesses why.........

First of all I find it interesting to see a large number of changes have been made since the passing of Joe Weider. Changes that have immensely increased the number of NPC and IFBB competitors within both the NPC amateur and IFBB pro ranks.

I don't know what Joe had in mind but it was somewhat apparent that he limited  the number of IFBB pros to a small enough number just large enough to accommodate the small number of IFBB promoted events while he was in charge.

But it is somewhat interesting that Jim and a handful of others made that change when the door was open to do so.

Soon enough it became evident that other sanctioning bodies such as MuscleMania and WBBF were drawing a decent number of 'smaller bodybuilders' who would eventually become the future physique contenders and it became apparent to some wise NPC honchos that  it was time to hop on the bandwagon .... which turned out to be a very wise decision as I am seeing it.

And also of prime importance is the fact that most of the general public takes offense when it comes to the world of professional bodybuildings and what it has turned out to be today.

It was definitely time for some sort of change .... and the NPC officials made a wise decision when the opportunity arose to do so.

And it now appears that millions of young folk are motivated to get in shape and look their best.

And that is where physique and physique competitions come into play.

I bet'cha that professional bodybuilding comps will be with us for many years to come but Physique events will be the real money makers for everyone involved  ... The NPC, the IFBB, the magazines, the internet, the supplement industry, etc. .... but just a handful of the physique contenders .... but a bigger handful than  the handful of IFBB pros making the big bucks today.

But only time will tell.

Give it a year or two and we'll know for sure.

i was there on sunday.
it was harsh lol

there were standing 5 people at the booth with shawn rhoden, maxx charles and brandon curry. i waited like 3 mins to take a pic with them

then there was the "gym aesthetics", "shape you" phaggotry booth where like 150 people were standing around cheering and shouting...

you have to admit the youtubers did a GREAT job in promoting themselves. partying, doing fun shit, literally throwing thousands of 1 serving booster packages around, shirts, protein bars etc. while the IFBB pros did basically nothing but sitting there and nearly falling asleep.

those three should be amped up...all three aesthetics...and they should join in with the youtubers have fun with them.

Who wants to look like bodybuilders? ok some of us did but the amount of drugs for years and being uncomfortable at that weight is unappealing. To the general public they all look the same, there's always something new on social media.

Particularly guys like levrone, talk about bad luck. Going up against physique and YouTube guys where guys like Matt ogus, Jeff said, have ten times the amount of "fame" and more recognized than some "legends" of bbing

Well, if Brandon "The Prototype" Curry actually got into shape and won a show on American soil, maybe they may give a damn. Also if "Sleepy" Rhoden had some back detail as well.

Again, noone of the younger generation gives a flying fuck about "contest winnings". Doing contests is gay, pumping weights, posting selfies and then going out picking up hoes with your great body is the new thing to do. 8 Time Mr. Olympia Coleman, 4 time Mr. Olympia Phil and 6 Time Mr Olympia Dorian were there and noone paid attention or even reocognized them except some of the old guys (and Palumbo). On the other hand when a 19 yr old Youtuber who trains for 2 years takes off his shirts the crowds were screaming and went nuts.

I'm sure Phil and jays booth was packed as far as bbers go, I believe guys like curry or rhoden nobody gives a shit about haha

No, even Phil and Jay got completely ignored for the most part while the selfie FB generation took over. The pros were sitting alone at their booth like sad, old farts, shocked and flabbergasted about the younger generation.

The bald guy up there is rumored to make about 500k per months by Social Media, Online training and his supplement and clothes stuff, has 350k Youtube followers and 800k FB fans with an average built at best (has probably the worst built of all of em but is the most successfull).
