You could buy sandows via mail order out of muscle and fitness in the early 80's. Probably hundreds of them out there. Bronze is cheap.

Btw, the sandows are just castings made from an old statue Betty weider found in an antique store. They would have made a negative mold straight off it out of silicone and cast it out of wax then covered it in sand and the wax melts out as the bronze is poured.

It all starts with Eugen Sandow. During the late 1800’s, Sandow was an extraordinary and coveted bodybuilder and strongman. He was selling out shows all over the world with displays of amazing muscular feats – such as massive weight lifting and chain snapping. He published books about strength and bodybuilding. He even had official merchandise – health drinks, energy pills, and tonics.

Through his amazing feats and popularity, he eventually caught the eye of a sculptor who was on the rise. This was Frederick W. Pomeroy and in 1891, Pomeroy and Sandow came together to devise a statue. A statue that would one day become the Sandow trophy.

On September 14, 1901, Eugen Sandow held an event called “The Great Competition” – which was the first major competition that focused on the judging of not only strength, but physique as well. The top three winners of this competition were awarded, you guessed it, the statue of Eugen Sandow. Gold, Silver, and Bronze for the respective 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

This was the first the world had ever seen the statue. A graceful but muscular man grasping a globe barbell. It perfectly depicted the qualities that Sandow possessed and wanted to inspire. A perfect representation of “The Great Competition” and what it stood for.

It became very popular amongst athletes and was quickly copied and sold to admirers for years. It became a calling card for gyms and all things related to muscular physique and strength.

While popular, the statues always remained in private hands and kept to the shadows. This was not a mass produced statue – but something special that were only found by an underground group of people.

It wasn’t until the 1950 Mr. Universe competition that the Sandow statue returned to the spotlight. The organizers of the event were certain that Reg Park would take the #1 spot at the competition and decided to award a very special trophy. The Sandow statue – modeled after the bronze 3rd place trophy from “The Great Competition.” To many people’s surprise, Steve Reeves ended up winning the trophy and brought the statue back home to USA. Before he left, a photo shoot was put together where Reeves posed with the Sandow trophy. This left a long lasting impression for bodybuilding fans.

So it only made sense that in 1977 the Mr. Olympia competition decided to honor the #1 bodybuilding athletes with something fitting to their master strength – the Sandow trophy. For the first twelve years of the competition, the trophies were tall and massive towers of brass – nothing memorable. But the Sandow trophy was now a thing of legend and known by most bodybuilders across the world. This would be the perfect award. This would be the best way to honor their athletes.

Rumor has it that the original mold for the 1977 Mr. Olympia Sandow trophy was found in an antique shop by Joe Weider’s wife. She immediately knew what it was and how important it was bodybuilding – so she purchased it.

While Joe was alive nobody questioned his Mr Olympia contest. Joe snuck in the back door in 1965 with a new idea to try to get the top guys to compete in his show and not NABBA in England.

He was eventually successful by the seventies and now the Mr Universe titles mean very little compared to the Mr Olympia. All those big titles relegated to not important since Joe's title became

THE big title to win in bodybuilding. Along with the Mr Olympia came the big medals and Sandow trophies. I have no doubt that they are cherished by all who win them. A nice sculpture for sure.

However, Joe was way off when he used that sculpture for first prize in his bodybuilding contest. Sandow was a figure from several generations before bodybuilding became something more than

a curiosity or sideshow. In the old vaudeville days strongmen were in demand and as it turned out a few of them had impressive physiques as well. Bodybuilding contests as we now know them

more or less originated in America with the Mr America title. That was a prestigious title back in the 1940s and 1950s. The Mr Universe title took off in England when Steve Reeves won in 1950.

In the meantime, Joe held the Mr Canada contest in Montreal then started to expand when he moved his warehouse to New Jersey. Eventually he held Mr America and Mr Universe titles. However,

the NABBA Universe was still the most cherished title according to the top bodybuilders including Arnold.

By the early 1960s the Mr America title became more controversial and they wouldn't let muscleheads or blacks win that title. This opened the way for Joe to have pure bodybuilding contests

and the rest is history. Larry Scott, Chuck Sipes, Harold Poole and Sergio Oliva won big titles solely on the excellence of their physiques. The idea of the Olympia was to have a contest that

the top guys could enter. One year Sergio won without having anyone to compete against him. He was that big and impressive. Then Arnold arrived and they battled for a few years until

something peculiar happened. Sergio was suspended for competing in an unsanctioned show. What happened to the ideal of having all the top guys compete? What a shame that was and

Arnold won year after year after that. The last time they competed was in Germany and many believe Sergio was robbed. There was no Sandow trophy for the winner in those days. Joe presented

Larry Scott with a silver plate. I think he had a crown one year as well. Prize money was something like $1000 and Arnold complained about that meagre amount. Schmoes were offering more

just to hang around Arnold!

Joe and Ben collected art and sculpture so it was no surprise when the Sandow was presented. This was almost out of Joe's fancy office. A replica and something special for the winner.

We wonder why a nice bronze of Steve Reeves wasn't used? There were some impressive bronzes of Steve available at the time. No doubt Joe took the most economical path re trophies.

Casting bronzes and finishing them is an expensive process. If you don't think so go and see what it would cost to have a bronze sculpture of yourself cast. It cost thousands of dollars.

When I look at the Sandow it is a nice bronze. Simple pose holding a vintage barbell that is seen only in museums. Is this what bodybuilding is all about? Not to me.

I look at the bronze of Dorian Yates and am impressed. Now that is a sculpture that represents modern bodybuilding and the superman. Sandow was never that. Will the IFBB upgrade

the trophy for the Mr Olympia? I doubt it. Maybe the pro athletes rep can make a representation on behalf of the top guys and fans out there? That would be a pipe dream.

Whatever Joe and Ben started with the IFBB and the Mr Olympia it seems to persist virtually unchanged over the years. I doubt there will be any significant changes in the decade ahead.

Not really.  I see him around town quite often.  Can barely walk, wearing the same clothes for several days at a time, and having a general "homeless" look to him.  His last boyfriend was some bloated face goomba with thinning hair and a bad skin complexion and acne (despite being over 50 years old) on his face and shoulders.  Probably all over, but you couldn't tell as he only tank tops that barely contained his saggy tits and knock off Crazee Wear type pants along with the generic New Balance shoes you get from Costco.  The dude left him and took most of his/their shit with him.

Singerman did not buy it.

It's going to look inspirational for an old bodybuilder somewhere in his office.   ;)

Pride of place next to Katz's t-shirt and Chris Duffey's barbell.
