His spine was not severed. More likely his lumbar artery / arteries which branch off of the Aorta were covered by a stent placed within his aorta.
Not an uncommon complication

Thanks doc. When someone can't walk, it's easier to just say his spine was severed. Accuracy is no substitute for laziness.

Did not read thread but I met him a couple of times ( not just a meet n greet), shared a taxi with him and also a couple other events. I found him to be very humble, gentlemanly, shy and overall a decent guy. I was especially impressed with how he treated his wife.

Im assuming if this is a possible risk with the surgery, then the patient would have to sign something acknowledging such risk, thus alleviating the doctor of all responsibility.

That's a shitty story but why just not use a wheel chair - and not raise $200k for a fancy tech toy he's convinced himself he needs? How many kids would $200k save in developing countries?

In 2007 he had acute aortic dissection and stroke. The tear was repaired and the stroke resolved. I doubt he was stented for a dissection and was likely repaired with a graph. Either way he should not have gone back to bodybuilding and competing at the Olympia level. The repair failed requiring them to go in again for a secondary repair and he was paralyzed.

He's delusional. He thinks some stupid robot that makes him "walk" upright is going to re-establish his self esteem. It's not. He needs to accept the situation and change his thinking. I wish him the best but this is NOT the answer.

Based on what evidence do you think that? I'm interested to know what experience you have with paralysed people that gives you this insight - so that I can be sure that you're not doing what I suspect you're doing, which is just outright fucking guessing what a person in a completely different life situation to you, should be thinking.

From what I remember at the time a high proportion of people who have this surgery end up paralyzed.

Problem is if you don't have the surgery you die.
