I am curious how steroid abuse shortens someone's height. I've read that steroids when taken pre-adulthood can stunt a person's vertical growth because they cause bones to mature too fast/soon.

Yes, it's actually estrogen that seals the growth plates. So if you're using aromatizing steroids you might seal the bones quicker. A kid could actually use aromatase inhibitors like Arimidex along with an anabolic steroid like Anavar along with GH to grow a bit taller than projected. I've seen dictors complain about how many parents come begging for GH to increase their son's height for athletic purposes.

If he actually lost 3 inches in height then I would say he has a serious back issue such as Scoliosis, but most likely he is full of shit like always.
