Back in my day if you wanted to work out climbing stairs you'd climbs stairs. If you wanted to ride a bike, you rode a bike. If you wanted to run, you get the picture. Now you have to pay for a gym to get on a machine that's plugged into an outlet.

We get it... you're old and things aren't how they used to be. Why so cranky oldtimers? Did the steamed carrots and mild farina you had at the early bird special give you dyspepsia?

Agreed. I used to climb 13 flights of stairs at work when I was in my 30's rather than take the elevator. I also rode my bike to work most days. Sometimes I would jog to the gym, workout and then jog home. Haven't been on my bike is a couple of years. Retired now, and there is only one flight of stairs in my home which I rarely climb since upstairs is extra space. Can't jog ever since my knee crapped out and I had knee surgery. Getting old sucks sometimes.

Stairs: how many stairs are a 30-60 min climb?
Bikes: you can't cycle almost anywhere at a certain speed without kissing the front of a car or a truck.

I wish I had a good excuse not to bike, but I live in a suburb of Portland, OR. We have bike paths everywhere. Many of the streets have designated bike lanes. It is one of the most bike friendly cities in the U.S. if not the world. My weak excuse is that I live on a hill that is a bitch to climb on a bike. I'd end up walking it up the hill and feeling like a loser. In the fall, winter and spring we get a lot of rain. Once you're wet, you stop caring about the rain, so that's a poor excuse.

It is hard to find stairs to climb these days. Many high-rise buildings discourage the use of stairs other than as a fire escape. I live about 12 miles from downtown where most of the high-rise building are located

Meh. I pay for the convenience of having everything in one place.
If I had to go to one place to liff, and drive somewhere else to walk up and down stairs, id never do it.

Besides, its called evolution. Theres nothing wrong with machines that simulate activities that can be done conveniently in one spot while entertaining oneself with TV, music, or working out with friends.

Theres a reason its more popular to do this in a gym environment, rather than seeing people going uo and down stairs at your local stadium or skyscraper all day.

I still do those things outside if I were to do them, I have never ran or drove a bike in the gym. Fresh air = the best.

Good to hear about those bike lanes. Governments should stimulate their citizens to take the bike more often, esp for short rides, say <5 miles. I always take the bike for shopping or working out, but I realize that things are different in other parts of the word (car culture of peace).

Not sure how steep that hill is and what kind of bike you're riding, but why not use that hill for some cardio work?

Doesn't matter where you are. Unless you live in south americas or africas more poor areas, people will always look at you with disappointed/making fun looks if you're a grown ass man with a bike doing groceries

but I don't give a shit, why should I care what mere mortal tax payers think, lmao :D

That's def not the case over here (Netherlands). It's often hard to find a bike parking spot at a shopping mall, regardless the weather.
