I tore my right bicep tendon 95%. I had to get it reattached, it was an unexpected seven hour surgery. Because of that on preachers I never go beyond parallel to the floor with my ROM. I won’t curl anything I can’t do at least eight reps with now. My ortho doc told me he would never do preacher curls, considers it the most dangerous bicep exercise. I love them, so I still do them.

Max on preachers is 125. Recline dumbbell curls are usually work up to the 65s. Standing hammers I go up to the 80s.

My favorite finishing exercise is a stacked drop set at the barbell rack. 8-100, 9-90, 10-80, 11-70, 12-60, 13-50, 14-40, 15-30, 16-20. Afterwards I can’t even flex my biceps without it locking into a cramp. Repaired bicep is right at 19 inches, my left is 18 1/2 inches. I’m 6’2” so I only consider it somewhat respectable.

Very strong and big ass arm, considerably above respectable. You got some balls to be doing preachers after that.

When I injured it it sounded like a fat pencil getting snapped in half, instant pain by the elbow. Doc at urgent care mis-diagnosed a strain and had me do PT for four weeks, obviously it just got worse. I went back demanded an MRI and they found the tear. What should have been a 1 hour fix took all day as the partially torn tendon healed onto other parts of my radius bone and had to be scraped off and reshaped. Doc said I had the largest tendon he ever reattached and he was one of the the team docs for Cleveland Browns so he’d seen a few. I assured him it was likely the only thing on me that would be the thickest he ever saw :)

I don’t worry too much about the repaired one but always wondering if the left one will let loose. Also should mention I did 3 dexamethasone injections the year I tore it- powerful corticosteroid. Likely not a coincidence. Won’t do those again if I can avoid it. I have a friend with Crohns- he was on long term prednisone and detached both bicep tendons 100% at THE SAME TIME. His wife had to wipe his ass for three months that was a fucked up injury. BTW he tore his doing ……. Preachers

I definitely am suspicious of the corticosteroids

I have found that finishing biceps and triceps this way gave me improvements.

In fact, my arms were at their biggest when i stopped using heavy weights and focus on form and a good pump.

I haven't done a preacher curl in almost 10 years, they are one of the most dangerous exercises IMO.

Seems they add more strain to the tendons instead of the muscle. Seems like a silly exercise.

My doctor would agree with you wholeheartedly. I only like the preacher for the fixed focus it creates. Similar to doing flys on the crossover cables while lying “spider style” on an incline bench. Fixing my torso like that lowers my weight limit significantly, and seemingly isolates my pecs better.

I do limit my ROM on preachers but I am willing to concede your dislike of them may be well founded.

Preacher curls / spider curls have their place  but i think you can build good guns with just standing barbell curls.

Slightly off topic, but what is considered a respectable arm measurement for a dedicated gym rat?

lean and defined?  17+
