Is it worth the money to attend the O in person?
« on: June 05, 2006, 07:43:26 AM »
I live within an 8 hour drive of Vegas, so I've been idly contemplating attending my first O in October. But after drawing up a provisional budget, I don't see any way of breaking out of the $50 cheap seats. And judging from the Orleans Arena seating chart, even binoculars won't be enough to check out Ronnie's razor-sharp midsection. [OK, cheap shot.]

So is there any other argument to be made for attending in person rather than going pay-per-view? I know that you can check out the ladies' pre-judging for free with a $10 Expo admission. [Thrifty, but depressing.] Can I make back my gas money with free protein samples? Or maybe find true love? I hear the booth models are really friendly.   :-*

While you will hear from the stage tools that "This is the best Olympia EVER!" as King Ron inherits another crown and collapses to the stage, reality will say differently.

And, one month after the NOC delivers an original stage show with a free-for-all finish, the O will be cash-poor and no PPV for the loyal fans who watch every year.

Unless you're a "penniless college student" or something, the fact that you need to draw up a budget for a simple weekend trip that doesn't even leave the country, and are sweating the difference between $50 tickets and $100 tickets is really, really pathetic.

You should date Medford... sounds like you would hit it off with her.  ::)

Some people are more organized with their spenditures, what's so wrong with that? A trip to the Olympia can end up costing on average more than $500.

It's good as a one time thing only. Last time I went was when Dorian won his first Mr O. It was awesome then, but then again, I was an easily impressed teenager. These days I don't go to shows anymore. Perhaps for the other events (if any), but the BB is extremely boring. If you can go, then go, but don't spend too much money, it won't really be worth your time.

PS.

It's good fun checking out the weirdos and 90 lbs "hard" guys that turn up looking like THEY'RE competing. Bodybuilding shows always seem to get the freaks together for a day.

Is this your first Mr. O, or first pro show period?  I would go regardless, but if you've never been to a pro show you have to get to one.  The magazines and television don't do the guys justice.  I makes for some great memories and you'll be very motivated to train when you get home.

BB crowds are always frightening and worth the price of admission by themselves.

Worth it to go once.

Yeah, it'll be a free for all after Lee walks on stage half an hour late in his racing suit with his helmet on to take the first place check and Vince shows up with not only an eye patch but a full on pirate suit complete with puffy shirt to take the second place check.  After that, it'll be utter chaos :D

If you have financial issues, then make the overnight road trip to Vegas late Friday, check out the Expo on Saturday, spend one night at Motel 6, and then drive home on Sunday.

Gas should run you about $175, an Expo ticket will be $10, your hotel will be about $60, and food shouldn't run you more than $100.  Add in $50 for incidentals and you're in and out for just under $400.

Enjoy.

The Olympia is one of my favorite shows - for a number of reasons. First, it is closer to home for me (since I live in the Los Angeles region). Second, it is mostly dedicated to bodybuilding, fitness and figure, and this represents more of the industry in which we are in, in comparison to the Arnold, which had cheerleading, 10K run, table tennis, archery, etc.

If you have never been to one, you are definately missing a lot, and that is a wonder that you can even comment on it if you don't go to it. Many people don't go to the Mr. Olympia show, but go to Vegas for the fun, and for the expo  So break it down - you have the expo, you have the shows.

The expo, which is at the Las Vegas Convention Center, is great if you would like to meet some of your favorite competitors. Many are there. Also lots of booths and stuff to check out. For $10, come on already.

The Olympia show is great if you want to see a bodybuilding show featuring some of the best in the world. While perhaps $100 a ticket is high, to see some of your favorite competitors compete in the best of the bodybuilding shows is cool. Hell, people spend $1,000 for ten minutes for a boxing match. It is the hype, the fun of actually going to a show, etc.

And lets not forget this is Vegas. Catch a show from one of the hotels another night, go check out the city sites, etc....
