Edwin Moses

122 Consecutive Wins
Born in Dayton, Ohio, Moses accepted an academic scholarship to Morehouse College in Atlanta and majored in physics and engineering while competing for the school track team. Morehouse did not have its own track, so he used public high school facilities around the city to train. Initially, Moses competed mostly in the 180-yard hurdles and 440-yard dash. Before March, 1976, he ran only one 400-meter hurdles race, but once he began focusing on the event he made remarkable progress. His trademark technique was to take 13 steps between all the hurdles (or even 12 between some hurdles), pulling away in the second half of the race as his rivals changed stride pattern. That summer, he qualified for the US team for the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. Though it was his first international meet, Moses won the gold medal and set a world record of 47.64 seconds.

After breaking his own world record the following year, Moses lost to Germany's Harald Schmid on August 26, 1977 in Berlin, his fourth defeat in the 400-meter hurdles. Beginning the next week, when he beat Schmid by 15 meters in Düsseldorf, Moses would not lose again for almost a decade.

By the time American Danny Harris beat Moses in Madrid on June 4, 1987, Moses had won 122 consecutive races, set the world record two more times, won three World Cup titles, won two World Championships, and earned his second Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles, where he was selected to take the Olympic Oath. After losing to Harris, he won 10 more races in a row, then finished third in the final 400-meter race of his career at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.

that is crazy 122 consecutive races won...EPIC

Anybody remember Dave Winfield?  The dude was a MONSTER and was at the top of the game in basketball, football AND baseball in college... decided to go with baseball, where he is a hall of famer... could have easily been a hall of famer in football and basketball if he chose to take either route...

Go do a search for Pelé and Ayrton Senna, then! ;) Both of them competed in worldwide sports, Jordan was the best in a domestic athletic modality.
Train forever !

I think of the 20th century would go to Eddy Merckx.

This thread got me to pondering which sport might be said to the most challenging in terms of overall athleticism. I mean, I've read that the Tour de France is the most demanding endurance event in the world - but Lance Armstrong might not be able to lift his bike over his head for all we know.

There's the decathlon, of course. But if we restrict it to the commonly followed sports, I think a good case could be made for the NFL wide receivers. It requires agility, explosive speed, some degree of strength (in breaking tackles), an extraordinary amount of coordination, and - perhaps the tiebreaker - courage in face of certain pain. [They go up for those catches knowing they're going to get slammed by a defensive tackle before they can even try to prepare for the impact.]

Come on people, NO Athlete has ever been so godlike as Jordan compared to the rest of the people in his sport. Ali lost 4 times, Woods blows hot and cold too much, Gretzsky was good but not enough titles, Federer is playing in a waterdown era of Tennis, Sampras sucked on Clay, Pele and Maradonna were Overrated, Carl Lewis has had his records broken and lost too much on Olympic stage, NFL doesnt even have a clearcut best, Ruth was a fatfuck, shows how good the rest of the league was for a Obese guy to be the best in the League. If Jordan was playing in todays Internet age he'd be so much bigger than Woods on a global scale it wouldnt even be funny.Espn always vote Jordan number 1 and rightly so.Check this vid, his 9th game as a pro, Enough said.

woods is as consistant in his dominance of the game as nyne an ve be expeced tbe.  golf s much diffeent tan basketball....if it were judged based on level of skill every tournament, he would never lose.    basketball; is not judged solely on one players performance; and, a player can have a succcessful game even when he isnt shooitng well; or passing well.    in golf.....if your driver is misfiring, your screwed. if you cant make a putt, you have no chance.   all of the weapons must be in working order.          not so in basketballl and team sports.

like i said....comparing them is useless....they were all great.

How about Slyvestor stallone, he's a great actor with a physique worthy of any athlete. He even has he has even outdone his rival athlete Arnold Schwartzenerger in being a real actor in a film career that isn't dependant on roids.
