Fox News perpetuates, then debunks the Obama India trip story
November 5th, 2010 4:33 am ET.Do you like this story?
President Obama's trip to India will not cost American taxpayers $200 million each day. The United States Navy will not be sending 34 warships just to defend the President on his trip. Those who watched Anderson Cooper 360, Keith Olbermann's Countdown, or the Rachel Maddow Show all know this truth as all three shows debunked the "Obama India trip" urban legend. Readers of many non-partisan sources including Factcheck.org and Snopes also know that the tale of Obama's extravagant trip to India simply is not true. However, many Fox News viewers of Sean Hanity and Glen Beck may still beleive the myth, since both talk show hosts told the tall tale as if it was a proven fact. Now, Fox News is even contradicting themselves in a recent article which simulataneously perpetuates and debunks the Obama India trip myth.
In a recent article on Obama's trip Fox News begins by describing the vast security apparatus that will be required for the President. Fox News then reiterates the false cost estimate in saying:
"The president will be accompanied by 40 aircraft, 3,000 people, a fleet of cars and 34 warships, according to a string of blow-by-blow news updates. The Press Trust of India quoted an official in the state of Maharashtra pegging the cost at $200 million a day."
What Fox News never says in that article is that the official quoted in that story is anonymous. The same kind of anonymous source that Sarah Palin bashed other journalist for using just a week ago.
People who read only the first half of articles would miss out on the truth in the Fox News story quoted above. Later, in the same story, Fox News actually debunks the very myth it brought up before. Fox News quotes a White House spokesperson as stating,
"The numbers reported in this article have no basis in reality. Due to security concerns, we are unable to outline details associated with security procedures and costs, but it's safe to say these numbers are wildly inflated,"
Fox News then confirms from a Pentagon official that 36 warships are not being sent to protect the President. The Pentagon spokesperson stated:
"We obviously have some support role for presidential travel ... but I will take the liberty this time of dismissing as absolutely absurd, this notion that somehow we are deploying 10 percent of the Navy, some 34 ships and an aircraft carrier in support of the president's trip to Asia -- that's just comical."
Of course, most people will never read the last half of the Fox News article. Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity will also likely never mention the $200 million figure again. As a result, millions of people in their audience will go on believing a blatant lie, and Fox News will now move on to the next distortion.
