Yeah, his savvy acquisition of the Beatles catalog shows he very much thought about money. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I think he even wanted to buy marvel comics at some point.

That purchase forever killed his friendship with Paul McCartney.  Thriller brought Jackson a huge pile of cash, and he was in search of something responsible (and lucrative) to do with it.  He asked his good friend Paul where to invest his money.  Paul advised him to do what Paul himself was doing: buy music rights.  Paul specifically told Jackson that he himself was going to bid for the rights to the Beatles catalog as it would soon become available.  Behind Paul's back, Jackson also bid for the same catalog--and won.  Paul felt betrayed in the worst way.  As an original Beatle, he felt "entitled" to own the catalog and put in a fair price, but Jackson topped his offer by millions.  Even worse, Jackson had never thought to buy music rights and only did so on Paul's advice!  For Jackson it was a simple business decision; the highest bider won the auction.  The friendship was over.  The two would never speak again.  :'(

You will recall that they previously sang duets: The Girl is Mine, Say Say Say.

What the fuck! He was a talented dancer/performer and a unique voice. Beyond that ...

Hell, he didn't write or play a damn thing.

As with most entertainers, he surrounded himself with A-class talent.

I mean, does anyone realize how much input the members of TOTO has on Thriller?!

Talented guy. But like Elvis (who also didn't write or play shit), and so many more, he was the result of a perfect storm of possibilities.

He wrote most of his big hits, sometimes with a few others, sometimes just 1 other, sometimes himself.Even though he couldn't play he would beatbox the rhythms, beat etc to the musicians who would make it in to what he was aiming for.I mean check out his beat boxing rendition of who is it, sounds just like the studio version.same with billie jean and the others.

Here he is during the writing of beat it, very clearly it's all from jacko, beat boxing, doing harmonies, vocals

Wrong.  Jackson held writing credits (solo or cowrote) on many of his songs.  And, yes, he would beatbox the main line on some tracks literally making his voice an instrument.  He does this on songs like Tabloid Junkie, Hollywood Tonight, Xscape.  Look at the numbers:

Off The Wall: 20 million copies
Thriller: 65 million copies
Bad: 45 million copies
Dangerous:  32 million copies
History: 33 million copies
Invisible: 10 million copies

Are you really going to sit behind your little keyboard and try to convince us that Jackson was just your average talented dancer/performer with a unique voice caught in a perfect storm?  Stop making a fool of yourself.   ::)

Really is amazing when you compare his talent to the "talent" of today. Usher has somewhat similar talent as far as being able to dance/sing at the same time but I hate his style of music. Like it was written, you can still listen to Jackson's music and it stands the test of time.

McCartney actually never bid for The Beatles' catalogue.  When the deal was put together, the rights holders actually approached Paul years before Michael, but he declined because he thought it was overpriced. After Jackson purchase the catalog, McCartney approached Jackson to renegotiate royalties, but Jackson declined.

After Jackson purchase the catalog, McCartney approached Jackson to renegotiate royalties, but Jackson declined.

Negotiations went on for months too, with Jackson pulling out as price was too high (above 50 millions dollars at the time) then when another buyer fell through they went back to Jackson and accepted a bid of 46 million.

I think this is basically what it comes down to for most people. Not that he was untalented, but he was the right guy at the right time. He was the first "urban"  musician incorporating white rock into his music in a video age. The video age was new and he really pushed it to its limits. His success was immense, but it was comparable to a few of the other big superstars of that time for the same reasons. Madonna reached a level of fame that was unprecedented because she was able to exploit the burgeoning video age and because she mixed white and black styles of music in a way that her audience considered fresh. Whitney Houston was the first female soul singer who was laying "black" vocals on top of "white" tracks and being marketed as a video darling. Not that these weren't talented people, but a big part of their style and their success comes from the zeitgeist they were a part of. Record sales were at their peak, celebrity culture was peaking, the video age was just born and a lot of people who would go on to be considered auteurs were cutting their teeth with work in the industry.

So few know just how little is required to earn a co-write tag. If you say, I think the line should be, Hold on, baby, and not, Stay calm, baby, that's a co-write.

Does anyone really think Bieber, Swift, etc. are the engines producing their material?

As with Mutt Lange/Shania Twain, etc., Mikey owes a lot to folks like Quincy Jones, etc.

Jackson was a talented guy with ideas. Like a great many. A catalyst within a scene/era who exploited all the angles.

Jackson was talented and a great entertainer, but to suggest he was on par, musically, with so many other monsters is to expose a hugely limited awareness of what's out there. Or of the art of music, specifically.

Bieber's worth a few hundred million dollars.

He's no more "talented" than the next thousand kids on YouTube clamouring for a piece of the pie.

Very, VERY rarely does the elite in music reach the superstardom heights of the likes of Britney Spears, Madonna, etc.

The general populace eats what's fed to them. They only float on the surface of an ocean thousands of miles in every direction and dozens of miles deep.

David Gilmore is well known to have taken all the credit despite not writing things. But it's simple: You want to write a song for Pink Floyd? We'll pay you, but don't expect credit.

So, with that in mind, figuring out who really deserves "credit" is as pointless as figuring what drugs are in the bodies of the Mr Olympia lineup.

The one occurrence that made Michael Jackson a world-wide star was Michael Francois posing to "Jam" at the 1993 NPC Nationals (starts at :38)
