White House intruder was carrying a knife, court document says

Published September 20, 2014

The White House intruder who jumped a security fence on Friday and got inside the presidential mansion was carrying a knife, according to the criminal complaint obtained by Fox News and contrary to initial reports that the man was unarmed.

According to the complaint filed in federal court, 42-year-old Omar J. Gonzales, of Copperas Cove, Texas, had a concealed black folding knife when Secret Service agents apprehended him inside the north White House door that faces Pennsylvania Avenue.

After he was arrested, he told a Secret Service agent that "he was concerned the atmosphere was collapsing and needed to get the information to the President of the United States so he could get the word out to the people," the document says.

No, but it just proves that his entire administration and staff are inept and being protected by the Keystone Cops. But as he should be, he's the most protected fake "President" in history....and for good reason might I add.

No, but it just proves that his entire administration and staff are inept and being protected by the Keystone Cops.

So let me get this straight. You are suggesting that the entire staff of the Secret Service must have either changed or, somehow, became inept since the days of George W. Bush. Do I have that right?

But as he should be, he's the most protected fake "President" in history....and for good reason migh I add.

He's as well-protected as any recent U.S. President has been, your penchant for proclaiming his fakeness notwithstanding.

Secret Service did a great job.  Rather than kill this guy they took him down non-lethally.  He caused a disturbance and that's about it.

Unless we want guards every couple of feet or some Berlin wall surrounding the Whitehouse, it's gonna happen.

voice of common sense right there.

We COULD have an electric fence or landmines in the yard, or like you said, a guard everywhere.  instead, our nation (for many years) has chosen to give the white house an open, warm, dignified look.  They could EASILY put 4 snipers on the roof and gun down anyone who jumped fence.

I use to think you were joking, but the amount of stupid content you produce is profound. You seem almost incapable of admitting fault or listening to someone else. How many wives have you had? has anyone ever told you something like this before? you ignore rebuttals and still hold your position, it's uncanny.

For example your argument was that obamas whole staff are inept due to this incident, straw then shows you that this has happened many times before, thus you are left with two possible explanations or arguments. Everyone is inept since this has happened with other POTUS in office or this isn't a sign of ineptitude but perhaps something else, like security/freedom ratio or for appearance, really there are many reasons. You choose to continue with the nonsense.

Avxo appears to be suggesting it's much of the same staff but I will let him confirm that.

WASHINGTON — The Secret Service is considering screening tourists and other visitors at checkpoints before they enter the public areas in front of the White House in response to the episode Friday in which a man with a knife managed to get through the front door of the president’s home after jumping over the fence on Pennsylvania Avenue, according to law enforcement officials.

As part of the screening, the Secret Service would establish several checkpoints a few blocks from the White House, the officials said. The screening would likely be limited to bag checks and not include measures taken at airports by the Transportation Security Administration, which include metal detectors and body scans.

Along with giving Secret Service agents and uniformed Secret Service officers a chance to check for explosives and weapons in bags, the screening would allow them to interact with the visitors and try to identify those who may pose a problem, the officials said.

Breach Prompts Review of White House SecuritySEPT. 20, 2014

The officials said it remained unclear how soon such measures could be implemented. Changes to the security around the White House are often complicated because the United States Parks Police, the White House Historical Association, the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia and the Secret Service all have to coordinate the effort.

Although those agencies and groups are concerned about security, they do not want to restrict access to one of the most popular tourist attractions in Washington — or turn the area into a seeming militarized zone.

The Secret Service said Saturday that its director, Julia A. Pierson, had ordered an internal review of the security procedures at the White House and how its agents and officers handled the intrusion. It occurred just after President Obama and his daughters had left the White House for Camp David.

According to officials briefed on the review, one of the biggest questions senior Secret Service officials want answered is why officers on the grounds did not deploy attack dogs that are specifically trained to stop intruders, even those sprinting across the White House lawn.

At all times, there are several muzzled Belgian Malinois on the White House grounds, officials said. The early assessment by senior agency officials is that the dog handlers should have quickly removed the muzzles and unleashed the dogs.

Agency officials are also puzzled as to why the guard at the front door of the White House did not follow procedure and lock the door as soon as an alarm signaled that someone had breached the fence.

The man who breached the fence, Omar J. Gonzalez, 42, of Copperas Cove, Tex., had been questioned in the past few months by Secret Service personnel outside the White House after they noticed him loitering. Mr. Gonzalez had not been arrested, nor was he told to stay away from the White House, as the Secret Service often warns people it is concerned about.

On Saturday, Mr. Gonzalez was charged in federal court in Washington with unlawfully entering a restricted government building while carrying a deadly weapon. He could face 10 years in prison.

Officers at the White House are instructed to hold their fire if an intruder does not appear to be armed. The officers do not carry Tasers, so they either have to hope the intruder stops at their warnings, tackle the person or use the attack dogs.

In the case of Mr. Gonzalez, he was not shot because he did not appear to be carrying a weapon or a pack that might have hidden explosives. He was found to be carrying a three-and-a-half-inch knife. The law enforcement officials said that it would also be very difficult to determine whether an intruder was wearing an explosive vest.

The Secret Service often has to deal with people trying to gain access to the White House.

Less than 24 hours after the episode Friday, the Secret Service arrested a man who tried to enter the White House grounds with his car.

On Sunday, Pennsylvania Avenue was again open to tourists, but there was a more visible uniformed Secret Service presence than usual.

White House Intruder Was Arrested in July With Trove of Weapons
The man who scaled the White House fence on Friday and ran into the front door of the presidential residence had been arrested in July by Virginia State Police with a cache of automatic weapons, a sniper rifle and “a map of Washington, D.C., with writing and a line drawn to the White House,” law enforcement officials said.
During the summer, Omar Gonzalez of Texas was arrested driving a 1996 Ford Bronco after leading Virginia troopers on a high-speed pursuit along Interstate 81 in Southwest Virginia. After being stopped, police found the car filled with weapons and the map, according to a release by the state police.
In the car, officials found a trove of weapons, including a .45 caliber automatic with two loaded magazines, a Smith and Wesson 380 caliber automatic with two loaded magazines and a 12-gauge shotgun, according to an inventory released by the state police.
Officials said Mr. Gonzalez was charged with reckless driving, one felony count of eluding police and possession of a sawed-off shotgun.

White House will now lock the front door

The White House on Monday said it would do what most homeowners practice to secure their property: Lock the front door.

“After Friday night’s incident, when the door is not in use, it will be secured,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest, clarifying that officials would, in fact, lock the door.

Its excuses after this weekend's breach are ridiculous and revealing of a troubled culture. The agency needs a new, outside director to clean house.

If you want to know what is wrong with the Secret Service, take a look at the statement the agency issued after a deranged intruder managed to enter the White House for the first time since the Secret Service closed off public access to the mansion during World War II.

According to the Secret Service, the Uniformed Division officers who did nothing to apprehend 42-year-old Omar J. Gonzalez after he hopped over the White House fence “showed tremendous restraint.” The agency is so arrogant that it thinks it can make such an obviously ridiculous statement and the public will buy it because we are fools.

But the Secret Service is not fooling the FBI. Senior FBI officials are horrified by the Secret Service’s handling of the matter and are laughing at its effort to cover up its own failure by brazenly praising the officers’ “restraint.”

The FBI’s reaction is well founded. In protecting the White House, the Secret Service Uniformed Division officers and the Uniformed Division’s Emergency Response Team, armed with P90 submachine guns, are supposed to be the first line of defense. But they were either asleep or just not paying attention when Gonzales sprinted across the lawn. They thus failed to unleash the agency’s Belgian Malinois dogs, which are cross-trained to sniff out explosives and to attack an intruder and take him or her down.

Having failed to unleash the dogs in time, the officers should have taken out the intruder with a bullet. When it comes to protecting the president, officers and agents must make split-second decisions to avoid an assassination. Courts have given the Secret Service much wider latitude than other law enforcement agencies in use of deadly force.

In Gonzalez’ case, no one knew if he was concealing a bomb or weapons of mass destruction. If it turned out he had them, it would have been too late to kill him once he was in the White House. While President Obama had just left the White House, he might have decided to return. Gonzalez’s act of racing into the White House by definition meant that he was a threat to the president. The Secret Service was derelict in its duty to protect the president by failing to eliminate that threat.

While all of this may seem obvious, apparently it is not to Obama, who has defended the Secret Service and its leaders even as it let Michaele and Tareq Salahi and a third intruder, Carlos Allen, into a White House state dinner even though they were not on the guest list. The president continued to defend the agency even as 11 agents had to be sent home from Colombia for hiring prostitutes when Obama was about to visit (a story which I broke).

Yet these scandals are the tip of the iceberg. As reported in my book The First Family Detail, while agents are brave and dedicated, Secret Service management perpetuates a culture that condones laxness and cutting corners. Under pressure from White House political staffs or presidential campaign staffs, Secret Service management tells agents to let people into events without magnetometer or metal detector screening. Assassins concealing grenades or other weapons could theoretically enter an event and easily assassinate the president or a presidential candidate. When it comes to firearms requalification and physical fitness, the Secret Service either doesn’t allow agents time to fulfill the requirements or asks agents to fill out their own test scores.

All this has led to poor morale and a high turnover rate. Tired agents and officers are forced to work long overtime hours, contributing to the sort of inattention that took place when Gonzalez scaled the White House fence. The Secret Service has refused to update its sensors around the White House with the latest technologically advanced devices for detecting intrusions and weapons of mass destruction. Its arrogance extended to leaving the doors to the White House unlocked on the presumption that its personnel could handle any threat.

No congressional hearings or internal reviews are going to fix the agency. Only an outside director with a fresh perspective—comparable to Robert S. Mueller III when he took over as FBI director—would be capable of reforming Secret Service management, shaking up the agency, and changing the culture that fosters corner cutting and punishes agents who question it.

But given Obama’s lack of judgment, that is not going to happen. An assassination nullifies American democracy. But Obama will continue to insist that he has confidence in the Secret Service despite the risk to his own life and the lives of his family members, who would be prime targets of an attack by ISIS terrorists on the vulnerable White House.

“We don’t have enough people or the equipment to do protection the way they advertise they do,” a veteran current agent (who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to fear of losing his job) says. “And how we have not had an incident up to this point is truly amazing—a miracle.”

Ronald Kessler, a former Washington Post and Wall Street Journal investigative reporter, is the author of The First Family Detail: Secret Service Agents Reveal the Hidden Lives of the Presidents.

While President Obama had just left the White House, he might have decided to return. Gonzalez’s act of racing into the White House by definition meant that he was a threat to the president. The Secret Service was derelict in its duty to protect the president by failing to eliminate that threat.

By Carol D. Leonnig and David A. Fahrenthold September 23 at 9:02 PM 

As an intruder sprinted for the White House door Friday, a Secret Service officer ran to get in his way — but the intruder barreled past the officer and kept going, officials familiar with the incident said Tuesday.

A few yards farther on, the intruder, Omar Jose Gonzalez, reached the White House door. A guard was supposed to be posted directly in front, but no one was blocking the door at that moment.

Those new details help explain how the Secret Service’s plan for guarding the White House — which envisioned five different rings of protection between the public sidewalk and the president’s front door — failed so completely.

A plainclothes surveillance team was on duty that night outside the fence, meant to spot jumpers and give early warning before they made it over. When that team didn’t notice Gonzalez, there was an officer in a guard booth on the North Lawn. When that officer couldn’t stop him, there was supposed to be an attack dog, a SWAT team and a guard at the front door — all at the ready.

But the attack dog wasn’t released.

The SWAT team, which didn’t react in time, was trailing Gonzalez as he dove through some bushes ringing the White House’s front entrance.

And when Gonzalez reached the door, he found his path clear and the door unlocked.

“One after another unit failed,” said a former high-ranking Secret Service official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe White House security protocols. “This guy has now crossed 70-some yards of restricted area. If he has [an explosive] device on him and he gets in, he controls the White House. He could have anything on him.”

Inside, Gonzalez was subdued by a plainclothes agent — the sixth ring of security that night. That agent’s job is to patrol a place that intruders are never supposed to reach: the interior of the executive mansion.

Questions for agency

Gonzalez, 42, did not express an intent to harm anyone at the White House. He was carrying only a folding knife, authorities say, and said he wanted to warn President Obama that the “atmosphere was collapsing.”

But the fact that he breached the White House’s legendary security perimeter — and did it using the unsophisticated method of jumping the fence and running for the door — has raised serious questions about the Secret Service’s preparation.

The agency is conducting an internal review of the incident. Officials will also face questions from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee at a hearing next week.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan declined to describe the details of Gonzalez’s path. Asked about the criticism that the system failed at several levels to stop the intruder, Donovan said it was not appropriate to respond during an ongoing internal review.

“Any conversation prior to the completion of the review is speculation or merely erroneous judgments provided by anonymous sources who are not in a position to know all the facts and whose experience and level are unknown,” Donovan said.

Already, Friday’s intrusion has altered the look of the White House grounds. Monday evening, the Secret Service put up a second fence along the mansion’s north side. About eight feet in front of the White House’s iconic, 49-year-old wrought-iron fence, there is now a line of metal barricades that look like bike racks linked end to end.

The Secret Service said that the new fence creates “a temporary buffer zone” and that it will stay up while officials conduct their review of Friday’s intrusion.

Four days after the incident, a look back shows that Gonzalez had come to the Secret Service’s attention twice earlier this year. This summer, he was interviewed by the agency after raising suspicions during a traffic stop on an interstate highway in rural Wythe County, Va.

The Virginia State Police allegedly found a number of weapons in Gonzalez’s car, including a sawed-off shotgun, two sniper rifles, an assault rifle, a bolt-action rifle, one intact shotgun and five handguns. Police also found a map of the Washington area with a circle around the Masonic temple in Alexandria, Va., and a line that pointed toward the White House, police and prosecutors said.

A Secret Service official, speaking on behalf of the agency, said Tuesday that agents had interviewed Gonzalez afterward, and found no reason to charge him with threatening the president or to refer him for mental health treatment.

Then, in late August, a Secret Service officer spotted Gonzalez walking along the White House’s south fence, carrying a hatchet in his waistband. Officers interviewed him and searched his car, finding camping gear but no evidence that he posed a threat.

The Secret Service official said that, at the time, officers were aware of the earlier contact with Gonzalez in Virginia. But, the official said, “he did not exhibit any mental-health issues at that point. He had not engaged in any criminal activity.” Gonzalez was let go.

On Friday, less than a month later, he returned to the White House and climbed the fence.

Crossing lines of defense

For some reason not yet explained, no officer was close enough to collar Gonzalez on his mad dash to the building.

The next line of defense was supposed to be the attack dog, a Belgian Malinois trained to hit an intruder like a canine missile. A video of the event shows a dog running onto the scene, possibly on a leash, but only after Gonzalez opened the front door.

The next level of security was supposed to be a heavily armed SWAT team that roves the White House grounds. This team was created specifically in the wake of a study by the Army’s Delta Force in the 1990s, which warned that the White House was vulnerable to jumpers.

It is unclear where the emergency-response team members were when the intruder passed Friday night. Some may have relocated to the South Lawn, where the president’s helicopter had lifted off 10 minutes before the intruder appeared. In a video of the incident, black-clad figures with guns are seen following Gonzalez, but at that point he was already close to the door.

Finally, according to former officials familiar with White House security, an officer is always supposed to be stationed at the front door. In this case, no officer was there, said several people familiar with the incident who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe what they said were lapses. Video footage shows an officer on the far eastern side of the porch with his gun pointed at Gonzalez — but it is not clear what the officer’s assignment was that night.

Several former Secret Service officials said in interviews this week that they were surprised no officers fired at Gonzalez.

These former officials said Secret Service protocols have called for shooting an intruder who is close to crossing the threshold of the White House, as it might not be clear if the person is a serious threat.

“If they aren’t stopping and are on the threshold of the house, you have to use lethal force,” said Dan Emmett, a former Secret Service counterassault officer. “This would have been an easy shot and one that would have been entirely defensible.”

Lets look at this for a second...as I was stationed at Fort Knox home of the Gold Vault.  The Vault lies adjacent to the Dixie highway that runs into Louisville and sits what would be the front edge of the Post.  Its visible all around much like the Whitehouse. Its surrounded by a perimeter fence with cyclone wire at the top. On the left side is a gate that allows two way traffic most of the day. At the back is a golf course. Near the gate is a turn off and a building where the security folks park. The perimeter is patrolled by both walkers and a Dept. of Treasury copper Humvee.  The top of the vault is flat and has armed guards with bino's. Why do I know this...because their always fucking visible doing their job. If you stop for a photo anywhere near the vault they come rolling out like magic.......Obama has allowed security to lax. He fails at simple shit. This is another example. This guy should have been engaged and shot. Just like anybody crossing our borders. If Chewy and the ewoks had been injured by this guy...holy hell would rain down upon the masses. All they need to do is their job....now more rights will be violated because he cant keep his house in order.

It's such irony that those crying about this are the same ones who wouldn't give a fuck if something bad happened to Obama anyway.

Actually, it does matter.

You are implying that the secret service sucks because they are all liberal democrats.

I would like to understand why you are making that implication.

It doesn't seem very likely that the Secret Service is full of liberal democrats as you are making it out to be.

I would be willing to wager, that as a group involved with some sort of law enforcement, it would be the exact opposite and there would be many more conservative Republicans as opposed to liberal Democrats.

BREAKING NEWS Monday, September 29, 2014 4:55 PM EDT

Intruder Got Deep Into White House, Official Says
A man who jumped the White House fence this month made it far deeper into the president’s home than previously disclosed, overpowering a female Secret Service agent inside the North Portico entrance and running through the East Room before he was tackled, according to a congressional official familiar with the details of the incident.
The man, Omar J. Gonzalez, was finally stopped as he tried to enter the Green Room, the official said. Earlier, Secret Service officials had said Mr. Gonzalez, 42, had only made it steps inside the North Portico after running through the front door.
The new development, first reported by The Washington Post, will create an explosive hearing on Tuesday when a bipartisan panel of lawmakers intends to grill Julia Pierson, the director of the Secret Service, about whether a lax and undisciplined culture inside the long-heralded agency has badly eroded its ability to protect the president and his family, several members of Congress said Monday.

Affirmative action hires at best.

The man who scaled the White House fence and was able to run through the front doors made it farther into the building than was previously reported, CBS News has learned.

The man, 42-year-old Omar J. Gonzalez, ran unobstructed for 70 yards across the front lawn of the White House before entering through the North Portico. On the way, he brushed by a Secret Service officer with a drawn gun, sources tell CBS News’ Bill Plante.

Gonzalez then proceeded to run through the entrance hall to the cross hall of the White House, past the staircase that leads up to the first family’s residence. He was confronted by a female Secret Service agent, who he overpowered, and made it all the way to the East Room, Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, told CBS News, citing whistleblowers.

Previously, it was reported that Gonzalez only made it through the north doors of the White House – which were apparently unlocked – before being apprehended by the Secret Service.

By Carol D. Leonnig September 30 at 1:15 PM 

The man who jumped over the White House fence and sprinted through the main floor of the mansion could have gotten even farther had it not been for an off-duty Secret Service agent who was coincidentally in the house and leaving for the night.

The agent who finally tackled Omar Gonzalez had been serving on the security detail for President Obama’s daughters and had just seen the family depart via helicopter minutes earlier. He happened to be walking through the house when chaos broke out and the intruder dashed through the main foyer, according to two people familiar with the incident.

Gonzalez, 42, was the first person in modern memory to jump over the White House fence and get into the mansion, largely the result of a failure of numerous layers of Secret Service security on the northern fence line.

Though the Secret Service initially said that Gonzalez was quickly detained inside the front door, The Washington Post reported Monday that the man actually made it well into the house before he was tackled on the far southern side of the 80-foot-long East Room. Once he burst inside the unlocked front door, Gonzalez, a former Army veteran, overpowered one Secret Service officer and, on his journey, sprinted past a stairway that leads up half a flight to the first family’s living quarters.

The additional information about the incident came as Secret Service Director Julia Pierson was being grilled on Capitol Hill about the Gonzalez incident and other security lapses revealed in Washington Post stories in recent days. The Post on Sunday detailed the agency’s fumbling response to a November 2011 shooting, in which a man fired a semiautomatic rifle into the White House residence while Sasha Obama was home, but the Secret Service discounted the gunshots on Constitution Avenue as a shoot-out between rival gangsters.

In the breach this past month, Gonzalez, who was carrying a knife, reached the doorway to the Green Room, a parlor overlooking the South Lawn with artwork and antique furniture, according to three people familiar with the incident.

Pierson confirmed in the hearing Thursday that, despite the Secret Service’s earlier assertion that Gonzalez was arrested inside the front door, Gonzalez was able to get far deeper into the White House and was eventually tackled outside the Green Room.

Lawmakers from both parties criticized Pierson and her agency for giving misleading and partial accounts of the security breach. The new information about the key role of an agent who happened to be in the building but was not part of the security team may raise further questions.

Pierson did not reveal during her testimony that the agent who tackled him was not actually assigned to the post where he confronted Gonzalez.

The agent, according to people familiar with the incident, who previously worked as a counter-assault team member, could easily have been outside or on his way home.

No officers are assigned to guard the steps to the Obama family’s private living quarters when the first family is not in the complex.

“There’s no telling how long this guy could have run around if the detail guy hadn’t happened to be there,” one person said on the condition of anonymity.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Facing blistering criticism from Congress, Secret Service Director Julia Pierson acknowledged on Tuesday that her agency failed in its mission of protecting the White House when a man with a knife entered the mansion and ran through half the ground floor before being subdued.

"It's unacceptable," Pierson told lawmakers. But her promised review of how the storied but blemished agency carries out its mission of protecting the president - and how it failed to intercept the intruder much earlier - left lawmakers from both parties cold. With key details of the extraordinary intrusion still a mystery 11 days afterward, several lawmakers said the agency should be subjected to an independent inquiry.

"I wish to God you protected the White House like you protected your reputation here today," Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch told Pierson at a hearing.

Calm but defensive in testimony before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Pierson disclosed that shortly before the intruder jumped the fence Sept. 19, at least two of her uniformed officers recognized him from an earlier troubling encounter but did not approach him or report his presence to superiors.

On Aug. 25, Army veteran Omar J. Gonzalez was stopped while carrying a small hatchet near the fence south of the White House, Pierson said. Weeks later, the same officers observed him "for some time" but never intervened. Gonzalez later went over the fence and broke inside the White House.

President Barack Obama and his daughters had left for Camp David shortly before the episode; Michelle Obama had gone to the retreat earlier in the day.

"The fact is the system broke down," declared committee chairman Darrell Issa. "An intruder walked in the front door of the White House, and that is unacceptable."

Not only that, he said, but the intruder penetrated at least five rings of security protecting what is supposed to be one of the world's most secure properties.

"How on earth did it happen?" he asked. "This failure ... has tested the trust of the American people in the Secret Service, a trust we clearly depend on to protect the president."

After the public hearing, which lasted more than three hours, Pierson and the lawmakers went into a closed meeting to discuss classified details.

Democratic Rep. Matt Cartwright of Pennsylvania called the Sept. 19 intrusion "stunning, outrageous, disgraceful."

Despite the lapses, Pierson asserted that "the president is safe." And she said of the intrusion, "I'll make sure that it does not happen again."

Obama's spokesman, Josh Earnest, urged the Secret Service to release results from its investigation as soon as possible, although he added that parts are likely to remain classified. He said Obama remains confident in the agency.

The president "was obviously concerned about this situation as a parent and as a father who is raising two young women here in this building," Earnest said Tuesday, and "there is legitimate public interest in this matter because it relates to the safety and security of the commander in chief."

Pierson's assurances fell short for lawmakers from both parties, who were aghast, too, about a four-day delay in 2011 before the Secret Service realized a man had fired a high-powered rifle at the White House.

The Washington Post reported on the weekend that some Secret Service officers believed immediately that shots had been fired into the mansion but they were "largely ignored" or afraid to challenge their bosses' conclusions that the shooting was not directed at the White House.

Such breaches, combined with recurring reports of misbehavior within the agency, cause "many people to ask whether there is a much broader problem with the Secret Service," said Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, top Democrat on the committee.

Lynch told the agency's chief at the hearing he had "very low confidence in the Secret Service under your leadership. Based on the evidence, that's how we have to call it."

Members of Congress briefed by the agency apparently weren't told of the full extent of the breaches. And the Secret Service gave The Associated Press a statement incorrectly saying the intruder was not armed, and never corrected the release. Under questioning, Pierson said she saw the inaccurate statement before the agency put it out.

Details emerged only later. Among them: The recent intruder ran through the White House, into the East Room and near the doors to the Green Room before being apprehended. This, after he made it past a guard stationed inside the White House.

On the way to the East Room, the intruder would have passed a stairwell that leads to the first family's residence. It was unclear what security would have been in place to prevent Gonzalez from attempting to go up to the family quarters.

Pierson said Tuesday that the front door to the White House now locks automatically in a security breach. She said that on Sept. 19 a Secret Service guard was attempting to lock one of the doors manually when the intruder knocked the agent down.

Senate Judiciary Committee staffers who were briefed about the investigation by the administration a week after the incident were never told how far Gonzalez made it into the building, according to a congressional official who wasn't authorized to discuss the investigation and requested anonymity. The official said the committee later was told that the suspect had, indeed, made it far beyond the front door.

Pierson said there have been six fence-jumpers this year alone, including one just eight days before Gonzalez went over.

Pierson's predecessor, Mark J. Sullivan, apologized to lawmakers in 2012 after details emerged of a night of debauchery involving 13 Secret Service agents and officers in advance of the president's arrival at a summit in Colombia. Sullivan retired about 10 months later.

Yeah - things are great in the Obama Admn  ::)

So now the performance of the Secret Service reflects on the Obama Administration as a whole? That's an interesting approach. Not trollish at all.

This story was originally posted at 4:12 p.m. It has been updated since then.

A man with a gun that the Secret Service did not know about rode in an elevator with President Obama during his visit to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta on Sept. 16.

Ebola Cured In 3rd American Patient

PROMOTED BY PRESSZEL.COM

The previously undisclosed breach, confirmed by two sources familiar with the case, raises new questions about the agency's ability to protect the president.

The incident, which took place three days before an intruder jumped a fence and sprinted inside the White House, involved a failure in Secret Service advance work to prevent an armed man from coming into close proximity with Obama while he was visiting the CDC to receive a briefing about the Ebola threat.

The threat to the president appeared minimal, but the incident alarmed agents on site and exposes a breakdown in several important Secret Service security protocols, the sources say.

The information comes the same day Secret Service Director Julia Pierson appeared before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and lawmakers publicly upbraided her for three hours about the Sept. 19 White House security breach, among other problems at the agency.

Lawmakers then questioned her during a session that was closed to the public Tuesday afternoon.

A source familiar with the case said Obama was in an elevator with his Secret Service security detail when a CDC security officer operating the elevator started taking photos and a video of the president with his phone and behaving unprofessionally.

Responding to the man’s behavior, one of Obama’s details contacted a member of the protective intelligence team, on-site detectives who handle suspicious-activity cases, to collect the man and interview him.

When he didn’t deny taking the photos, his CDC supervisor, who was on hand for the interview, said the behavior was highly irresponsible and told him to hand over his gun, shocking the Secret Service officers who were questioning the man.

Before the president travels anywhere, Secret Service agents make it their job to know who will have access to the president and anyone with a gun needs special clearance and may not be allowed to carry it when the president is onsite.

In addition to the Secret Service, only sworn law enforcement officers are allowed to be armed at a location where the president is visiting, the source said. Contract security officers are not allowed to be armed.

A Secret Service spokesman did not have an immediate response but said he would look into the matter and respond when he had more information.

Whatever else is going on at the Secret Service, they've got the Obama Administration scandal playbook down pat, which is really depressing.

1. Lie about what happened - They not only misled the public about how far Omar Gonzalez penetrated the White House, they apparently were less than forthcoming with Congress. According to CBS News, "a congressional official told the Associated Press that Senate Judiciary Committee staffers who were briefed a week after the incident by the Administration were never told how far Gonzalez made it into the building." At today's hearings, House Oversight chair Darrell Issa (R-CA) referred to the initial statement from the Secret Service as an "early false report."

That's putting it mildly. We went from an unarmed man who jumped the White House fence and got stopped at the front door to a man with a knife in his pocket penetrating the White House all the way to the Green Room, on a path that took him right past the stairs leading up to the First Family's residence. (By a stroke of luck, they had left the White House just a few minutes before the intrusion.)

2. Dribble out the truth - Even after that "early false report" started to fall apart, the Secret Service kept as much of the truth under lock and key as possible. We only know that Gonzalez was able to overpower one of the Secret Service agents in his path because a whistleblower told Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) about it. And only after the hearings were well under way did we learn the amazing detail, not provided willingly by Secret Service director Julia Pierson voluntarily through testimony, that Gonzalez was stopped by an off-duty Secret Service agent from the Obama daughters' security detail.

It doesn't matter how long ago he made the original post.  What matters is your need to reply to everything he posts.  All I'm trying to do is help you with your obsession.  There is something weird about your need to engage 333 on every post.   Here is a challenge.  Can you go three weeks without responding to a post from 333 or a thread he's started?

President Barack Obama rode an elevator this month with an armed security contractor who had three criminal convictions, a violation of Secret Service security protocols, according to published reports.

The latest embarrassment for the Secret Service comes after agency Director Julia Pierson on Tuesday took full responsibility for a Sept. 19 breach of security when a man carrying a knife got into the White House. …

Secret Service Director to Resign
Julia Pierson, the director of the Secret Service, is expected to resign in the wake of several security breaches.
It came less than a day after lawmakers from both parties assailed Ms. Pierson’s leadership and said they feared for the lives of the president and others in the protection of the storied protective agency.

Yeah the secret service is doing a bang up job for Obozo.  A couple of theories......

*The current Secret Service is full of "his" people and by that association are obviously as incompetent as he is.

or

*They aren't his people and while generally competent, they don't really care if someone gets to him and does whatever.

In reality Obama did appoint the Director of the Secret Service that recently resigned.  A woman of course.  Interesting that so many of Obama's appointees tend to be either black or female.  Probably just a coincidence.  I mean, it's not like he has something against white men or something.  It would be crazy to suggest that.

Secret Service director Julia Pierson resigned on Wednesday following the slew of revelations of security breaches under her watch, but the White House was still standing behind her as recently as this morning.

“The president and everybody here at the White House stands solidly behind all the men and women of the Secret Service, including the director of the Secret Service,” press secretary Josh Earnest told CNN.

Following the announcement of her resignation, Pierson told Bloomberg News she made the decision “in the best interest of the Secret Service” because it would “take pressure off of the organization.”

The funny part is that I honestly didn't even consider the watermelon element of the picture.  I did notice that the picture has a white guy in it when the names of the two white house stalkers were Hernandez and Gonzales.

that is funny as it odd

you didn't even notice the actual joke being made but did notice that the guy in the tub didn't actually look like the two fence jumpers

maybe the racist cartoonist wasn't trying to portray either person but just mocking how anyone can get into the white house and make a racist joke

Yes because I had just read an article about the two fence jumpers and saw the cartoon soon after.  I just thought it was funny not for the watermelon comment but for the reference its making to the recent lapse in security.

you're saying you actually didn't even notice the blatantly racist comment or that it never even occurred to you

seems like the cartoonist wasn't trying to portray the two actual fence jumpers but just those recent events to set up a racist joke

comedians are all making jokes about how easy it is to get into the white house but why does the guy in the tub need to make a racist joke when he could have made any other kind of joke

http://www.bostonherald.com/news_opinion/local_coverage/2014/10/herald_cartoonist_apologizes_for_obama_cartoon

Boston Herald cartoonist Jerry Holbert took to the airwaves this morning to apologize for a political cartoon that set off a social media firestorm after appearing on the paper's editorial page.

“I want to apologize to anyone I offended who was hurt by the cartoon,” Holbert said this morning on Boston Herald Radio. “It was certainly, absolutely, not my intention.”

The cartoon, a satire on recent Secret Service failures to protect the White House, depicts President Obama being surprised by an intruder in his bathtub, who asks “Have you tried the new watermelon flavored toothpaste?” A caption reads: “White House Invader Got Farther Than Originally Thought.”

Critics of the cartoon are slamming it as racist. Holbert claimed he came up with the idea to use watermelon flavor after finding “kids Colgate watermelon flavor” toothpaste in his bathroom at home.
“I was completely naive or innocent to any racial connotations,” Holbert said. “I wasn’t thinking along those lines at all.”

Although the cartoon appeared as he drew it in the Herald, Holbert said he was “confused” when he received a call from his national syndicate last night asking that he change the flavor to “raspberry.”

When asked if he thinks he should have called the Herald after that discussion, Holbert admitted he “should have done that.”

“That was where I would say I wish I had done that,” he said.

The Herald has also issued an apology for the cartoon, saying "As Jerry Holbert discussed on Boston Herald Radio this morning, his cartoon satirizing the U.S. Secret Service breach at the White House has offended some people and to them we apologize.  His choice of imagery was absolutely not meant to be hurtful. We stand by Jerry, who is a veteran cartoonist with the utmost integrity."

If you want to see watermelon used as racism, go to the Marriot Beach Harbor club in Hilton Head.  Right there in the lobby behind the check in desk is this gigantic painting about 6'x10' of a watermelon patch behind a white fence.  Peeking over the top of the white fence with rapist eyes and drooling tongues are about 6-7 little black kids.   The name of the painting is called Desire.   I shit you not.  Done by a local artist.

Then again, not all that shocking when you realize it is in South Carolina.

Elijah Cummings is suggesting the problem with the secret service is racist.  They aren't protecting Obama because hes black. He's presenting this as what the majority of black people believe.  This is an irresponsible thing to say and a pure conspiracy theory.  By the way, does anyone think Obama didn't "diversify" the secret service.

Scandal ridden admn

Despite White House denials of inappropriate behavior from administration staffers during a prostitution scandal that rocked the Secret Service in 2012, a new report from The Washington Post suggests an Obama aide had a prostitute staying with him overnight at his hotel at the time.

According to hotel logs reviewed by The Post, Jonathan Dach, then a 25-year-old law student helping in the White House travel office, registered a woman in his room at 12:02 a.m. on April 4, 2012. Secret Service investigators determined the woman was a prostitute, The Post reported.

Dach denied to investigators hiring a prostitute or bringing anyone to his room, and denied the allegations detailed in The Post's new report through his attorney. The story also notes that Dach now works full-time at the State Department and Dach's father Leslie is a prominent Democratic donor.

From The Post:

Within the inspector general’s office, investigators and their bosses fought heatedly with each other over whether to pursue White House team members’ possible involvement. Office staffers who raised questions about a White House role said they were put on administrative leave as a punishment for doing so. Later, Edwards, the acting inspector general, resigned amid allegations of misconduct stemming in part from the dispute.

More than a dozen Secret Service agents and military personnel working in advance of an Obama visit to Cartagena got drunk and brought prostitutes back to their hotel rooms at the time, according to CNN. The scandal rocked the agency and cost more than ten Secret Service employees their jobs, in addition to overshadowing the president's trip to the Summit of the Americas.

Shortly after The Post story was published, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest dismissed it in a tweet:

According to The Post report, former and current Service Service agents were angered by the "radically different" treatment their team members received while the White House refused to fully investigate one of its own.

Former Agent: The Secret Service Is In Collapse

In an exclusive interview, a high-ranking agent breaks code of silence: "Catastrophic failure of all procedures and protocols"

A former high-ranking Secret Service Agent has come forward to detail to the Observer in plain language exactly how this vaunted agency seems to have disintegrated before our very eyes.

Beginning with the scandal involving more than a dozen Secret Service agents being fired or disciplined for a prostitution scandal surrounding the President’s visit to an economic summit in Cartagena, Colombia, the United States Secret Service has endured a stunning and unprecedented series of high-profile failures. They include multiple incidents of drinking on the job, a car wreck, an untruthful account of seven shots fired into the south façade of the White House and most recently, a shocking breach in which an armed man, Omar Gonzalez, hopped the White House fence, ran across the lawn unscathed, overpowered a female Secret Service agent inside the North Portico entrance and “ran past the stairway to the presidential living quarters and into the East Room where he was finally tackled by an off-duty agent.” Director Julia Pierson resigned last week after coming under scathing bi-partisan criticism during a Congressional hearing that seemed to produce outrage beyond even the usual camera-friendly pontificating.

Despite the high profile torrent of disasters, it has been difficult for the public to piece together the “how could this happen” part of the story. The code of silence among USSS agents, including former agents, is stronger than most similar agencies – after all, “Secret” is literally its middle name. And as a relatively small agency, with about 3000 active compared to about 40,000 FBI or 21,000 CIA, its grip on leaks and gossip has largely prevented journalists from employing the “according to agents who declined to be named” sort of color that would help paint an accurate picture of an agency in turmoil.

Secret Service Director Julia Pierson testifies to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

That grip loosened substantially this morning. A revivified Washington Post published a long front-page shocker, in which the Obama administration is accused of covering up knowledge of the Colombia scandal for political reasons linked to protecting an important donor and avoiding embarrassment in an election year. In sum, a young White House aide seems to have hired a prostitute but it was the Secret Service that was accused and disciplined, with White House officials happy to let USSS take the public blame and the lead investigator saying, “We were directed at the time . . . to delay the report of the investigation until after the 2012 election.”

It’s a stunning piece of journalism, as much for the way the Post‘s Carol D. Leonnig and David Nakamura penetrated the silence of the USSS as for the shocking allegations of a White House cover-up. And now it seems the can of worms is beginning to open.

Last night, a former agent the Observer has spoken to for years without being allowed to cite even on background finally let it fly. Without allowing himself or herself to be cited by name or other identifying details (including even gender pronouns), this former high-ranking agent, who is still in close contact with working agents, unloaded on the agency in a long, wide-ranging interview, which appears below, unedited except for grammar and punctuation (some was conducted via email).

Observer: So … what the hell is going on?

Former Agent: Ken, I’ll be honest with you, the agency has huge issues – under-staffed, under-trained, under-funded, not being innovative in doing more with less.

How did this happen?

We were uprooted from Treasury after 9-11 and putting us under DHS was the start of many of our issues. [The USSS had been part of the U.S. Department of the Treasury; in March 2003, it moved to the Department of Homeland Security.]

Also a key factor is, back in the day, we did 20 years. The pension plan changed in January 1984 to 25 yrs or age 50 — many guys are leaving the service to go to other agencies where they do not have to relocate to get promoted and work less.

Our generation of agents did have an sense of dedication. We worked our asses off all mission orientated. The leadership that is current are all my vintage that stayed instead of retiring. They are not innovative or informed about newer security measures, especially on the Technical side.

It sounds like a generational shift has yet to occur.

They (the old-timers) don’t know how to motivate a generation that seems sometimes to expect everything with immediate gratification. Also, post-911 the Service picked up many additional protectees. [We] picked up national special security events like the Super Bowl. [In the past,] duel mission of investigations and protection made for great agents who knew how to stay sharp and be savvy – investigations have suffered due to extended travel due to protectees who travel much much more than a Ronald Reagan ever did.

Why are all these incidents suddenly breaking out?

The attrition rate for the uniformed division officers have suffered as they use the training and top secret clearance to get better, higher-paying jobs where they are an asset to a high-paying police department after having endured the rough, extensive training. The agency during my tenure was was 3350 agents and is now 2900. And the way they are forced to hire according to OPM rules (Office of Personnel Management) is rife with issues.

Can you elaborate?

You can have a guy with one arm make it through most of the application process before he comes in and they see he has one arm. They’re trying to get it changed but it’s a long process. The most recent WH incident was as a result of a catastrophic failure of all procedures and protocols. Nothing went right. A muzzled k9, officers who could not catch the trespasser, a new, young, small female at the White House door who took cover. And when he [Gonzalez] got in she gave chase but could not overpower him. An off duty Cat team counter assault team member heard the radio chatter responded and subdued him.

This incident really shocked the public in a way that the drinking and prostitute stuff never could. To know that a guy was running loose in the White House stunned Americans.

I don’t support everything UD (Uniformed Division) does but shooting a “running man” with a Sig 229, against the backdrop of 200-300 tourists lined along the fence, is not a shot I would want to make, unless the President was in residence, which he wasn’t. That rendered this to the exalted status of an “empty government building,” which was having work performed on it, while the King was out of residence. Short of placing a glass dome over the White House, and not shooting unarmed people that jump the fence, about all I can see that can be accomplished is to post UD Officers along the fence, for 5 years at a time, to catch the occasional jumper. [Regarding all the critics and second-guessers, I would like to] ask what he would do when he missed his shot at an unarmed “fence jumper” running toward an empty house, when one of his rounds hit a 5-year-old from Iowa there with her parents to see the White House.

Why are you speaking to me for publication after all these years of declining to allow me to publish?

I’ve been dying to push out good stuff. It’s so damn frustrating. I believe we need to be more proactive in highlighting our success. Our agency and Afauss (Association of Former Agents, U.S. Secret Service) need to show the value add. The USSS does amazing work every day so does Afausss – the nature of both groups is to run below the radar.

The bureau (FBI) stacks the deck in Congress and always gets the funding. We’re now stuck in DHS with other agencies nipping at our heels. Tough times for the Secret Service and critical times for the survival of an independent USSS and Afauss as we know it.

It’s a shame the few malcontents spit venom for 5 minutes of satisfaction that do harm to so many who have served so honorably. You know, it’s not the FBI’s fault. We screwed up.

Ex-Secret Service Officer Gets 20 Years for Sexting Teens From White House
by ALEX JOHNSON

A former uniformed Secret Service officer was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Thursday for sending sexually explicit photos of himself to underage girls — while he was on duty at the White House.

Lee Robert Moore, 38, of Church Hill, Maryland, pleaded guilty in March to enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity and attempting to transfer obscene materials to a minor. The Secret Service fired him after his arrest in November 2015.

At the time of his arrest, Moore was assigned to protect the White House complex, and prosecutors said he sent some of the materials while on guard duty at the White House.

Image: Lee Robert Moore

Moore was nabbed in an undercover sting when he sent indecent materials, including a picture of himself, to someone he thought was a teenage girl on the mobile apps Kik and Meet24, according to the criminal complaint. The "girl" turned out to be an agent of the Delaware State Police working with the Delaware Child Predator Task Force.

After his arrest, investigators learned that Moore had sent sexually explicit messages and images of himself to real underage girls in Florida, Texas and Missouri, according to the complaint.

Moore's case was heard in U.S. District Court in Palm Beach County, Florida, so he could consolidate his guilty pleas.

Moore's wife urged U.S. District Judge Daniel T.K. Hurley in court documents to sentence her husband, a retired Marine and father of two children, to the minimum sentence of 10 years.

"I can honestly say he is still a genuinely good and decent person," she wrote. "I ask that you consider the lowest possible sentence as it would greatly benefit our children, as well as myself."

But prosecutors asked Hurley to sentence Moore to life in prison, writing in court documents: "It is particularly galling that he was himself an armed guard at the single most important residence in our constitutional republic, yet he repeatedly used that guard booth to take photos of his penis and send them to underage girls."

Moore must also register as a sex offender and undergo sex offender treatment. Once he is released, he must remain under court supervision for the rest of his life.
