Title: Pushing up your own bodyweight vs. Bench pressing it!
Post by: jumpstart on August 19, 2007, 08:13:51 AM
Maybe you can push up your let's say 200lb. bodyweight quite a few times but It's alot harder to bench press 200lbs. Anyone knows why this is the case?

1. All of your bodyweight is not on shoulder.
2.Much more stabilized.

No.  Great question tho.

I bet Michael J Fox could go back to the future and find the answer for us, but only the doc would understand the paradox.

because when doing a push up you're only doing part of your weight using lever type action

Put a scale under your palms when you start push ups, and you see that you are pushing only part of your body weight. It is just same when you try to lift piano or car or something like that: it is easy lift one end of it, but lifting the whole thing is quite difficult. Ok, piano could be little bit too big for you guys, put you can test it with some smaller thing, like a broomstick or something...

Yeah... thanks man.  I was only joking around.  This thread had some good potential until he got an answer.  Should have told him it's because you're way stronger face down than on your back or something.

No big deal tho.  He'll post again tomorrow.

I havent pushed for my max in while.  I use to do 50 pushups 3 times a week when I was young.  Then when I got into more serious training I stopped and did less.. didn't need to do that many.  Right now I do 2-3 sets of weighted pushups everyweek.  After doing weighted pushups.. then when you do regular push ups with no weight its like doing nothing.. easy.  Its ashame how you see people who cant even go fully down and up with good form and do 10 pushups with no weight.  I guess its easier to put junk food in your mouth then to do some real work.  I think doing weighted push ups at the end or during any time in a chest workout really works well.
