Most would say a deadlift but I would say and Olympic clean and jerk.

Overall strength I would say Olympic Clean and Jerk with the dead lift a close second.

That's just my personal opinion though =)

clean & jerk although 99 percent of gym rats never do this exercise so i would go with the dead lift

I used to do it in an attempt to gain more overall strength, but it seems like it used to be more explosive than strong--seemed like a cardio exercise more than anything.  I just do deadlifts in place of clean and jerks.
