Communication.  My kids talk to me.  Share secrets.  We trust each other.  They know we're in this journey together.  I know which ones of their friends are having sex.  We actually have very explicit discussions about sex.  Make sure you do the same with your kids.  It's a dangerous world out there for them.

I know.  But you are realistic that every kid will reach a point where rationalization occurs, and he/she decides it's better to just do the damn deed and not involve pops.  Alcohol has been known to speed up this process.  if they're under 18, you may be very lucky and still maintain that connection.  College age, good luck.  I just finished college and spent a lot of time in the dorms and man, those kids were always drinking and getting down.  (Not to scare you- but many people don't know how bad it really is at schools).

Been there.  I know all about the college atmosphere.  That's why we're investigating Christian colleges in addition to secular schools.  But as I've learned from one of the kids at my church who attends a Christian college, alcohol, sex, and porn are still prevalent.  But it's a matter of a degree.  Very difficult process (the college stuff).  I'll be going through that very soon.     Gearing up for the SAT. 

I think my girls will make good decisions.  Is it possible they give it up before they get the ring on their finger?  Yes.  But I've been working hard and praying about that with them.  They are extremely bright and have a great moral compass.  Their mother has also set a terrific example for them.  They're surrounded by other female role models who do the right thing.  I think they'll be fine.

I hear you.  I've been through it.  More than once.  I'm not looking forward to that aspect of college life.  Makes me want to keep them here.    On second thought, I'm eager to get them off the payroll.    

My kids go to a private Christian school now and they have classmates who cheat, steal, use drugs, and have sex.  My kids don't.  In fact, I'm taking one of my daughters out to reward her for just being a great kid in the face of some of this stuff.  She called me at work on Friday to tell me about one of her classmates who is a chronic cheater and was finally caught.  I'm very proud of them.

I can't tell you how traumatic it was for me to know my Dad actually flat out LIED to me, when at the age of 8, I asked him what a penis was, ...and he told me he didn't know.

Thanks.  I'll keep that in mind.  Reminds me of the first time my two oldest daughters saw me changing my son's diaper.  They had this befuddled look on their face and my oldest finally said "Daddy, why does he look like that"?   

We actually have a "birds and bees" talk with our kids.  I used a book called "How to Talk to Your Child About Sex" or something like that.  There is like a script in the book, that I practically read from for my oldest.  Winged it a little with my second.  I'll probably just show my son a video.     And my little one?  She's on her own . . . .

I can attest to that. When I was in highschool the best girls came out of the private schools. Hell, girls at the public school I attended where furious over it. All the guys would go for the Catholic schoolgirls since they partied way harder and had way more sex. You could tell they where doing it to liberate themselves from all the strict rules and restrictions they faced.

Same deal in college. The girls who where the most oppressed during highschool, where the biggest slampigs on campus. Make sure to not overdo it. Do not want a silent rebellion. I am sure you have it totally under control and things will be fine. Just making a broad statement about what I have seen.

Given the biologoical sex drive, do they really think it's realistic to expect people to spend 15+ years of sexual maturity celibate?  Hell, if you can get them to wait until they're out of high school you've accomplished a miracle.

I've seen that too.  In my experience PKs (preacher's kids) have been the absolute worst.  There is a delicate balance.  On one hand, you don't want to put kids in straight jacket.  On the other, if you give them too much you're shooting yourself (and them) in the foot.  Two extremes I've seen are parents who refuse to even discuss sex with their kids and parents who actually allow boyfriends to spend the night.  I don't agree with either approach.

Because I don't think there such a thing as "safe sex" outside of marriage.  Neither birth control nor condoms are foolproof.  Would you have sex with a woman you knew had genital herpes, so long as you used a condom?  

Teaching traditional methods of birth control have been a colossal failure.  Just look at the unwanted pregnancy rates in this country.  All it does is send a mixed message:  don't have sex till you're married, but here, keep this condom in your wallet.  

I teach my kids abstinence.  

As if that weren't enough, condoms have no effect on herpes, nor do they have any effect on stopping a far more dangerous virus for women, HPV, which causes genital warts and can lead to cervical cancer in women.
