His sordid stint in the world of gay for pay aside, he was a good BBer.  One of the best?  Definitely for his time.

However, that extreme HIT "work one set per bodypart once per month" bullshit is just plain dumb.  No wonder Mentzer turned into a colossal soft fatarse in his last days.  Anybody on that routine would.

He's my favorite bodybuilder. A true inspirational figure in my life, who possessed both mind and muscle.

His sordid stint in the world of gay for pay aside,

Where did you come up with that bullshit? For gods sake have some respect. The guy is dead and can't defend himself.

I remember reading about his death when i was 15-16 . I started crying even though i didnt know the guy in person (yeah call me gay whatever). I had only read a book of his and read about him online. I was so fascinated with the guy and his way of thinking and his writing, still am.

Also he was so cool and stylish.  ;D

RIP Mike Mentzer.

Great bodybuilder (won in 1980 in my opinion), a very intellectual man, and wrote some great motivational material too.

His website has some good articles.

Mentzer had a good physique but was not quite what people paint him to be.  He was purported to be an intellectual but when you read his writings you see that he was quite myopic, simplistic, and closed-minded in his thoughts which is an indication that he was not quite as intelligent as many people think.  He also had many problems in his life from what I have read to include the abuse of stimulants and bouts with depression and or some form of insanity.

That said, I always enjoyed his writings and liked his training style.
