20 Congressmen Fear Harassment Allegations SoonBy Jeffrey Rodack | Monday, 18 Dec 2017
Fears are mounting around Capitol Hill that a major news outlet is getting set to unmask at least 20 lawmakers for sexual misconduct, Politico reported.
The growing speculation about a major harassment story started about a month ago, according to Politico. CNN, The New York Times and Politico are outlets occasionally mentioned as among those preparing the story.
Part of the reason behind speculation that 20 lawmakers would soon be revealed is the feeling that the number is believable, Politico noted.
Meanwhile, USA Today reported rumors persist that dozens of more allegations against members of Congress are coming.
Politico said The Washington Post is also mentioned as the news organization getting set to reveal a host of lawmakers in connection with harassment allegations. And the number of lawmakers has increased with that particular rumor.
"I am hearing The Post has a list of 40-50, evenly split between the parties, that have had sexual harassment charges," one lobbyist texted Politico.
As the rumors continue to swirl, both lawmakers and aides are continuing to worry, the website said.
Just last week, four lawmakers asked Politico whether the story is real.
And one GOP aide is telling congressional members not to be alone with any women – staffers or reporters.
"Members who have high-profile elections coming up or just are really out front on a particular issue are now feeling like they may be targets," said Kristin Nicholson, a former Democratic chief of staff, who had helped organize a letter signed by more than 1,500 former aides calling for an overhaul of Congress' harassment policies.
