So what you're saying is that since my kids have more opportunity, they should be exempt. Funny, everytime someone questions Bush or the war, you hear chimpscreaming about not supporting the troops yet the same people will not put themselves or their children where their mouths are.
Eventually, you'll run out of volunteers. Honestly, that's already happened and we're re-tasking National Guardsmen/women all the time. So in effect there is already a draft. If there was a draft, all Americans would get to spread democracy, freedom, running water, etc.... to the Middle East/Persia. There were volunteers in every war with a draft. All status levels of our society "paying the cost for freedom" is only fair.
A draft is the only true test of the American public's support of wars like this. This draft would specifically have no exemptions whatsoever under any circumstances. If armchair/cyberspace heroes are so damn convinced this war is a great idea they should goosestep right down to the local recruiters office and enlist.
Right-wingers are always saying "if you don't support the war, you don't support the troops". I'm saying "if you really support the way, volunteer or send your kids."

Not feasible. Military service is the only opportunity for a lot of poor people, we'll never run out of poor people. Only a draft will end this war. If people wouldn't go in.... fuck their credit up forever, LOL! Or just take them kicking and screaming to the front lines. :) In the long a draft would save more lives.

Poor people keep the economy moving. They buy tons of crap they don't need and use tons of govt. services that require a well paying infrastructure to support. Also, a certain level of unemployment is necessary to hedge against inflation. Actually, poor people are far more important than the rich.
Also, poor people let some of us feel superior. :)
Draft a bunch of rich kids, let them get killed/wounded, and people will have a whole different view of the war. In the long run.... sacrificing the "important" people from our society will be to everyone's benefit. Again, there should be no exceptions to the draft.

I'd be open to discussing the draft. Everyone ought to serve at least a year in the military IMO. Some countries do have mandatory military service. I wouldn't trade my military experience for anything.

It would do more good than harm. The US has had drafts before and survived.
Also, we should draft Canadians so they can see some decent weather and have good reason (firsthand) to complain about how bad we suck. :)

1. I think this is just talk, because we will never have mandatory military service in this country IMO.

3. I think every kid can benefit from at least one year in service. All it does is delay the start of adulthood by at least 12 months. I don't think most kids know what they want at age 18 anyway. Serving their country would probably help most of help them develop maturity, patriotism, responsibility, self control, etc. There are few higher callings than military service IMO.

I'm not sure watching people die or killing people would develop maturity or self control, but it would have a profound impact on a kid and give him or her a much greater appreciation of life, freedom, and sacrifice. You also have to keep in mind that combat is the exception. This is an extraordinary time. Most military members from Vietnam to the invasion of Iraq did not see combat. (Today, most of them have combat patches.)

Well I'm sitting here in Kuwait waiting for a flight back to Afghanistan. I'm against the draft. I don't want to serve with people who don't want any part of the military. As far as being passe..thats sorta insulting bud..military service is the highest form of patriotism and citizenship..regardless of this war or its causes. Its because of the military that the damm rags don't take over.

There is a boatload of proof that the Afghanistan/Iraq wars are NOT legitimate.
You start sending upper class kids to wars, and you're suddenly going to have a hell of a lot more info leaks to undermine and further reveal the motives behind the wars. The lie WORKS as long as it is volunteers who are okay with it. You start sending media, senator, and CEOs' kids, and you're going to have to start answering questions.

I don't mean no one at all, but the policy makers and main supporters aren't really affected. I've read/seen/heard a ton of people supporting the war but it's pretty easy to sacrifice volunteers while saying not supporting the war is unpartiotic behind a computer screen. Of course our people should be supported, that's not the point. The wars are stupid and make none of us safer.
Making everyone pay the price is the only fair thing to do. It won't happen so we'll keep retasking the same people until manipulating enlistment bonuses is the only way to keep a fighting force. When all is said and done, Afghanistan will have no change at all and Iraq will be worse than ever.

if our 535 congressmen knew their kids, nephews, and children of their biggest financial donators would be getting maimed in Baghdad in order to secure foreign oil, they might think twice.
It's easy for them to say "X number of lower-class poverty level non-tax paying people will become war casualties".
Make it affect them personally, and they'll suddenly take on a while new perspective!

Vietnam was the last time the military "needed" people. With current technology there is no need for a draft.

Robert Kaplan wrote a book titled "Imperial Grunts" that explains the mentality pretty well. Patriotism is important, but the sense of trying to make life better for the average Afghani or Iraqi is pretty important as well. Unfortunately, acts of kindness are not featured much in the media. There is a lot of satisfaction when a US troop sees Afghan girls going to a school he helped build or a impoverished kid drinking potable water from a recently purified well...

MKD..I have to disagree. I've been on a ton of those humantitarian missions and evey little Afghan girl that goes to school or that we inoculate leads to some afghan boy grabbing an AK and fighting for the taliban. The males in Afghanistan hate that shit... We have made a big mistake hoisting womens rights on these people. These are not rational folks....they are very lazy..easily swayed and everything we do 'offends" them. We have tried to do so much for the Afghan people but they could care less..they continue to stick their hand out without doing much for themselves.

The recruiters are already scrapping the bottom of the barrel. Before, you couldn't have Probation Before Judgement on a misdemeanor criminal case...now they accept that.
I had helped a kid going into Navy get copies of his crim record. The recruiter came in the next day, and said that the kid said a Asian man had helped him, and he was looking for him. Thing is, I'm black , the kid was black and so was the recruiter. These are people that are in the the "best military in the world".
If the draft is instituted, there will so much of a backlash it won't be funny. You got hackers, mercs, all those with grudges coming for elected people heads, shutting businesses and corporations down.
I say send the incarcerated to go fight. You wanta to shoot guns and kill and maim people...go at it.
