I was able to get free airfare recently to anywhere in the U.S. I've always wanted to go to Venice Beach, for obvious reasons. Can anyone share an experience they may have had or suggest the best time of year to go there. Thanks for any advice.

Had a blast!
trained with Mattarazzo,Jim Quinn,saw Chris Cormier,Flex,Rico,Strydom,Dillett

Great place; has to be seen once, at least for a few days including a weekend. For the best weather, avoid Dec.-March. It may not be what some remember but without being able to compare with what was, there's still plenty of BB artifacts.
Train at Gold's, walk by the old Gold's, spend a Saturday and/or Sunday on Venice Beach including the outdoor pit, go to the Firehouse. Stop by Schatzi. Walk through the canal off the beach where Morrison used to live.
Then there are all the LA things if you still have time after that. There are inexpensive hotels right in Venice.

Jim Quinn
Did he tell you the story about Flex and his bodyfat? ;D
-
There really isn't enough in Venice to make a trip cross country for. But Venice is part of LA, and there is lots to do in LA.
While December through March is our rainy season, we get on average 11 inches a year, so the odds of it raining during your trip is low. While in the winter it can drop into the 40s at night, it can be 80 degrees any day of the year. The worst time to go to the beach is June, as that is when we're likely to be fogged in (it's called June gloom). The first part of Sept is when it usually hits 104.
As far as Venice, it's all gentrified. All the cheap apartments have been replaced with million dollar condos. Struggling bodybuilders can no longer afford to live there. Plus there are hard core gyms pretty much everywhere now.
-
You can eat at the Firehouse, where scores of bodybuilders have eaten time and time again. While they have a huge regular menu, it is the bodybuilder's part of the menu that people come for. Most don't actually eat in the Firehouse area, but in the patio, or right next to the patio, where at one time, that was the place to eat. Just this past Saturday, Quincy Taylor and his girl went to eat there for breakfast/lunch before going to the NPC Excalibur.
Right behind the Firehouse on the next street over his Max Muscle Venice, where Dave is usually lounging away. About a block away from their is Gold's of Venice, and it is worth just talking a look, for at one time, many of the bodybuilders trained here (Note - this isnt the original Gold's of Venice).
On weekends, it is fun to walk on the boardwalk, checking out Muscle Beach of Venice, and also - lots of entertaining and colorful stores around there.
But like they said, this is Los Angeles - there is lots to see and do here.
-
YOU SHOULD SERIOUSLY GO IN THE WINTER WHEN ALL THE SNOWBIRDS COME OUT.THEY HAVE A COUPLE OF TACO STANDS OUT FRONT FOR AFTER WORKIN OUT ITS AWESOME.

Not when I go to fucking DisneyLand...........
-
I've lived here and trained at gold's for over three years now
it really isn't that special
i mean, if you were already in the area, i could see why you'd want to stop by
however, i wouldn't make a trip just for that
-
I went in July a couple of years ago and trained in World gym and Golds gym. Had a great time. I stayed in Venice across from World gym was great should have stayed in Santa Monica though...
-
Did he tell you the story about Flex and his bodyfat? ;D
Pray, do tell...
-
Pray, do tell...
Well a week before the Olympia at Golds Venice Jim Quinn witnessed Flex Wheeler get his bodyfat measured at an astounding 0.0% by Billy Smith, he later announced this on the live broadcast of the Olympia on ESPN.

The two places you've gotta check out, no ifs, ands, or buts, is Gold's Gym/Venice and the Venice boardwalk. 8)

Stay in Santa Monica if you can. You can jog down the beach to Venice, Venice is a dump, you don't want to be stuck there. There are cheap hotels in Santa Monica at smaller places. You can go anytime of the year and its usually nice. Don't go in June cause it is overcast at the beach everyday with fog. august is good, and Even Christmas time is nice, a little cooler. Golds is open Xmas day!

Yes and the Santa Monica Promenade too. There are hot chicks everywhere on the Promenade. Especially in the summer and at Christmas.
-
It's awesome. The best part is you don't even have to use the freeway to get from LAX to Venice. At any time you can go into Gold's and see famous bodybuilders or photo shoots that are going on. The guys at the front desk are cool about letting you take a quick walk around. It is expensive for a one day pass but worth it. Last time I went I saw Lee Priest , who is hell-a short, some big Canadian fuck who was bigger than everyone there, lots of hot pussy, this cute fitness broad Jamie Eason. She was hot too bad she's 4'10" lol.
Of course go to max muscle, go to the firehouse.
I joined a pickup game of Basketball on the boardwalk and even got interviewed by some show on Comedy Central on wether I wear boxers or briefs, so on the spot I dropped my pants to show them. The host chick loved it. The place is a blast. While you're in LA do the rest, go to Hollywood, visit Universal, take a walk down Rodeo and start search. LA is da bomb

Misinformation. There are a number of decent inexpensive hotels right off Venice Beach that i've stayed at. Venice is not a dump, no.
i wouldn't make a trip just for that
Anyone who hasn't been to Venice and LA, a trip is well worth it.

True.
Santa Monica Promenade too. There are hot chicks everywhere on the Promenade.
Good point; close to Venice and worth a walk over to see as well.

Sounds like you know very much about the bodybuilding spots but have yet to show signs of interest to step into a gym and actually lift a weight, typical american.

It's great; i'll bet even Stallone likes it. Skating & drumming are two of the best things about it. The drum parties on the beach continue on after dark.

Boring attitude; go and see before passing judgement from behind a computer.

i can dig the old school bodybuilding atmosphere but im not gonna go crazy over a crowded place of weirds, attentionwhores, rollerbladers, drummers etc
and thats the shit you linked to.
next you gonna show me videos of people selling fake watches at the beach

It's not overwhelmingly crowded, there's lots of space. Those who are open-minded will enjoy the alternative lifestyles found in Venice, part of why BBs like it.

No, for the many others here who are justifiably interested. You're hopeless, hold the views of a senior citizen-stick to your nearby shopping malls where everyone looks the same.

Venice is a three ring circus during most of the year. After the Memorial Day weekend to Oct. it can rock. Culture shock to most anyone outside of the LA area. If you don't like the weird and strange, be warned. Your not in Kansas any more. Well worth the experience though. (weather is usually the best then, but we have what is called California Eddy's. These are extended weather fronts that bring overcast and gloomy days any time of the year. No smog at the beach, smog is inland) Venice is much improved with lot's of million dollar condo's. The old Venice canals are cleaned up and pretty much a high rent area. Also a large artist colony is there. Venice and Santa Monica do have a crime problem. That's why there are so many walking and bike patrols along the boardwalk/strand. South Central (not that far away from the beach) gangs go there, usually on the weekends. If your driving at night around Venice, get lost and wind up near Lincoln Blvd & Washington Blvd, please turn around and go back the way you came. Nearing the Mar Vista area...local bad boy gangs.
Check out the Third Street Promenade for some prime looking hot women, who think that covering only 5% of their body is the thing to do. The majority of them look like a Victoria Secrets model and dress like one. Even some of the 50ish women look unbelievable. Drive down to Marina Del Rey for some great bars and eating places. Also have a ready supply of outstanding hottie's there. Take the PCH up to Malibu. Not much there really but at least you can tell people you were there. If going to Hollywood stay along Sunset Blvd.....best up scale clubs. Players and pretenders everywhere. Again ultra hot chicks.
The legend of the muscle mecca has pretty much been reduced. Go to Gold's by all means. A piece of BB'ing history. Take a workout, might be a lesser known Pro training next to you. Usually friendly staff, the older guy's seem to take time to talk about what was what back in the day. A Venice and Muscle Beach trip can be a life time experience for a lot of folks. Good Luck.
-
you can usually score some really good blow on lincoln and rose. ;D
-
muscle beach, gold's world all worth the day rate to say you were there, maybe take some photos.
do not go to the firehouse for a post-workout meal. service is sooo sloooow you could slip into a coma waiting for your order.
-
I was there a month ago. I worked out for 4 days. The equipment is old and beat. If your trying to c some pros or popular magazine people go in the morning around
830. Glad I saw it but thats it!
-
too many meth freaks strungout and being wierdo's for me. i'm never going back there...creeps me out.

Will "world" Harris gives very informative guided tours of Gold's.... starting in the "posing room" and finishing up in the "gent's" toilet.

Again, Stay in Santa Monica you can jog the beach 2miles to golds. You're cardio, catch a pump, eat Firehouse or Omellate (sic) parlor, and walk back. You'll think you died and went to bodybuilder and chick heaven. Venice smells like incense and cigarettes. The chicks are all fat, or doped out, white as a ghost, or of the artsy kind you don't want to look at anyway. After dark, it is a ghetto.

Way too negative-getbig suddenly seems filled with indignant mormans. ??? Venice Beach is unique, has to be visited for a full day or two over a weekend. Plenty to do in a one-of-a-kind place. No one will bite either.
-
face it you're the only weirdo here that appreciate that atmosphere.
-
A Venice Beach trip is not worth travelling across country for, but if a trip takes you to the area go see it.
Never PAY to workout at Golds/World Gym - instead tell them you just moved to the area and you would like to try the gym out before joining, I did this with no problems.
My visit I saw Robby Robinson @ World gym, Gunter,Arron Baker, Barbarian brothers,Wil Harris @ Golds gym. I also saw Dorian at the Firehouse resturant.
Saw all the freaks down the Venice Beach board walk. Do not walk around Venice after sunset !!!

Wrong on all counts. Travelling there just to see it & LA is a nice trip, worth it especially for BBs.
As far as the "freaks" on Venice Beach, that's completely (negative) speculation. It's an eclectic crowd, a scene more original than most. No idea why anyone other than Bush voters would find that a problem, in fact the scene there is a big part of what made muscle beach great. Without that, wouldn't have been the same; I never heard Schwarzenegger or any of the current guys bitch and whine about it the way some some of the pussies here are, because it's almost all positive and interesting, especially if never experienced before.
I was there well after dark; no one was worried in the least. More speculation.

Still, visiting the areas where at one time, the heart of the bodybuilding scene was is pretty cool. So I you do come to Los Angeles, it is nice to stop there to check it out for a while (if you can find some parking)...
